  • As blue light fades on a bitterly cold winter's evening, the barrier of an Austrian level-crossing has been lowered to stop traffic and allow a high-speed ICE-T train to continue on its route through, near Salzburg, Austria, Europe. OBB, the Austrian Federal Railways operate a network of 5,683 km makes them the by far largest railway-company in this country. Heavy snow has fallen in this region of the Alps and deposits have settled on the fences and the glowing red stop traffic light, signalling for motorists to halt at this dangerous road-crossing location. So fast is this mode of transport, it blurs past this cold, desolate spot where only one nearby house is next to the trackside. Blair is with an unknown Downing Street assistant and is has been reading the London Evening Standard newspaper in the First Class carriage at a time when fellow-passengers take little notice of the future controversial world statesman. Then, he could travel in relative obscurity, without large security details. It is dark outside and we see no detail through the window of the vast Victorian mainline station outside.

This is the Kent countryside, otherwise known as the fertile Garden of England, and the route for high-speed trains that ply back and forth between western Europe and London St Pancras. This international passenger service was made possible by the completion of the Channel Tunnel in 1994 operating eighteen-carriage Class 373 trains which run at up to 300 kilometres per hour (186 mph) on a network of high-speed lines. Eurostar is operated by the national railway companies of France and Belguim, SNCF and SNCB, and by Eurostar (UK) Ltd (EUKL), a subsidiary of London and Continental Railways (LCR) which in turn also owns the high-speed infrastructure and stations on the British side.

They pull suitcases behind them as they negotiate the airport terminal transport system that takes them across the sprawling complex of terminals and tunnels. There is a slight blur to the picture showing the hurrying nature of modern air travel, vastly different from the pioneering days of flight for only the socially elite. • During the morning rush-hour at Bank underground station in the heart of London's financial district, the grim face of 90s tube travel is seen here in a wide landscape of rounded tunnel and the curve of the station platform. A train guard watches for a green signal as Londoners are sandwiched inside the nearest carriage. Waiting for the doors to close and the hot air to seal them inside the small space, men and women press against each other in a claustrophobic journey along the Central Line. The Central line is a London Underground line, coloured red on the tube map. It is a deep-level "tube" line, running east-west across London, and, at 76 km (47 mi). Incorporated in 1891 it is today the longest Underground line and also the busiest with around 260 million passengers a year.

  • Girlfriends eagerly await the opening by one woman of a bottle of bubbly, en-route by train to Ascot racecourse on Ladies Day at Royal Ascot racing week. The hats are wide-brimmed and the pinks are bright in this first class carriage with an old fashioned corridor. Royal Ascot is held every June and is one of the main dates on the sporting calendar and English social season. Over 300,000 people make the annual visit to Berkshire during Royal Ascot week, making this Europe's best-attended race meeting. There are sixteen group races on offer, with at least one Group One event on each of the five days. The Gold Cup is on Ladies' Day on the Thursday. There is over £3 million of prize money on offer.

  • Near the junction of the 400 to Buckhead, the 401 highway divides and splits during afternoon rush-hour traffic which slows and builds up so that vehicles and cars back-up as they head home and out of Downtown Atlanta, Georgia. The inner median is coned off during some construction work which slows the traffic even more. Crossing the 5-lane road comes a train of Atlanta's own mass-transit system, the MARTA network and it approaches the overpass with care. We see the infrastructure of a modern metropolis at the busiest time of day when the exodus to get home puts the roads and feeder lanes under the most pressure. Fortunately, the weather is fine with good visibility making drivers' journeys a little shorter and more tolerable but it shows too America's habit and dependency on car culture.

  • Londoners sit and stand in a packed carriage on an overground rail service, stopped at a central London station. The windows are filthy with railway and city grime and the faces on passengers tell the story of a miserable experience travelling at rush-hour in the capital. The 90s carriage was an old style phased out in the late 90s, their construction proving unsafe and out-of-date with a modern transport infrastructure.

  • The rack and pinion narrow guage mountain railway nearing the summit of Mount Snowdon, the highest point in England, on 14th June 1992, in Llanberis, Wales, UK. The rack and pinion system used is that patented by the Swiss engineer Dr Roman Abt. The railway uses double rack rails, fastened to steel sleepers between the running rails. Each locomotive is equipped with toothed pinions (cogwheels), which engage the rack and provide all the traction necessary to scale the steepest inclines. On the way down, the rack and pinion system also acts as a brake.
