  • Striding urgently are a group of rail commuters emerging from London Bridge main line station in central London along a station concourse. Marching in step, the strangers are on their way to work in the City of London or Southwark on the south bank of the Thames. They are all passing-by a mobile smoothie drink kiosk that has the slogan "Guaranteed to keep you going till lunch." London Bridge station is one of 18 railway stations managed by Network Rail and is a major transport terminus and interchange for central London and serves over 42 million people a year. The tube station serves the Jubilee Line and the Bank branch of the Northern Line.

  • Seen from an office block high vantage point, thousands of commuters pour northwards over London Bridge against the direction of queueing buses and cars. It is a scene about the transient business community and mass transport. The working population arrives early for work over the bridge in the City of London's historic financial district. We see the sunlit faces of those walking towards the viewer which echo the red tail lights of the stationary vehicles. So gridlocked is the traffic on the southbound carriageway, there is a lone cyclist stuck and squeezed between the curb and a double-decker bus. On the other side of the road, the street is almost empty of motors adding to the drama and chaos. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. The City of London is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City as it is known, is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but  it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. London Bridge's history stretches back to the first crossing over Roman Londinium, close to this site and subsequent wooden and stone bridges have helped modern London become a financial success. ...

It's a transport hub for tube lines, buses and overground train routes and we see masses of pedestrians and buses reflected in the glass of a bush shelter window. As a result of the industrial action, the buses are full so the quickest way of reaching one's destination is to walk. An official points out directions, someone shields his eyes from the sun, a lady walks with her hands in pockets, the 239 bus to Victoria approaches and sightseeing tours sign advertises tickets. People are seen in differing scales and sizes.

We might guess that it is the start of a new academic year and that he is about to attend a new school for which he needs to take a train on his own. His mother and younger and older sister are also to the far right of the picture so he may go with his elder sibling carrying a multi-coloured umbrella and a bright blue briefcase containing his lunch and a few items needed for lessons. Surrounded by adult commuters, some of who look on with mild amusement, also make await their train from the city out of town. Mostly, people mind their own business and what is a special day for the boy will become a much-travelled route.

As a result of the industrial action, the buses are full so the quickest way of reaching one's destination is to walk. People near Victoria Station, a transport hub for tube lines, buses and overground train routes so we see businessmen in dark suits during the heatwave, women striding along towards their transport home and we look up at them from a low-angle in the street. One man seems to pause from indecision while others are more confident about their fate and direction in life.

Inconvenienced commuters have had to seek alternative modes of transport on this day when the bus drivers' union called their first industrial action for 30 years, seeking a bonus of £500 for their work during the forthcoming Olympics. London's buses carry 6.5 million passengers every day with the capital's infrastructure relying on reliable travel.

  • During the evening rush hour, hundreds of rail commuters are queueing to board a Thameslink train which has just arrived on the platform at Farringdon Station in Clerkenwell, London England. Standing 10-deep, they patiently wait the next ride home southbound during a tube strike forced the closure of underground stations and making workers take alternative routes. Looking down from a high bridge we see the train's roof and the heads of those delayed and inconvenienced. It is another miserable journey home.

Even for London where bizarre events take place, this strange scene attracts attention from strangers such as this mountain bike that has been attached to the top of a parking notice pole, locked in place by a D-lock - a crime prevention measure to thwart any determined bike thief, of which there are many in the city. Cycling in London is increasing by 80% every year but 52 bikes are stolen with nearly 440,000 reported stolen a year.

  • As blue dawn light brightens to become another wintry day in south London  a commuter awaits the arrival of a distant red bus to climb a slippery hill. Standing by the timetable of the bus stop on Red Post Hill  in the borough of Southwark  traffic approaches slowly on a road that controversially  appears not to have been gritted properly for vehicles to maintain a proper grip on this snowy surface. Headlights point uphill and the freshly-fallen snow has started to freeze so wheel and tyre traction will prove ever-difficult for those trying to journey to work.

It is a scene about the transient business community and mass transport. The working population arrives early for work over the bridge in the City of London's historic financial district. We see the sunlit faces of those walking towards the viewer which echo the red tail lights of the stationary vehicles. So gridlocked is the traffic on the southbound carriageway, there is a lone cyclist stuck and squeezed between the curb and a double-decker bus.   • On both sides of the railway track, thousands of commuters desperate to get home after a long day at work in central London, line the platforms to we see from an aerial perspective. But the rail workers' union has called for industrial action and there are no trains yet for these passengers to board for north or southbound services. Sensibly away from the edges, people are standing up to six-deep in anticipation of a ride home as the exodus to the suburbs hits its peak time. 37 per cent of workers in the capital used rail or underground travel as their main form of transport to work, according to regional and local statistics compiled by the Office for National Statistics.

  • We are looking down from above to office and business workers who are lying down and relaxing in the grass in their lunch break at Finsbury Circus, a circular green park space in the heart of London's financial district, the City of London. Surrounding them is an art instillation of steel sheep that are incongruously grazing among the assorted people, much like they once did when London was a home to livestock en-route to market and other animals used for transport. It is a warm afternoon and in the foreground, a man wearing a dark suit has taken off his polished shoes and is lying his head on his jacket in the warm afternoon, loosening his tight tie and stretching his neck. Elsewhere, a lady is sitting eating a packed lunch with the Sun newspaper and a man a little further behind is in jeans and plimsoll shoes. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. The City of London is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City as it is known, is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but  it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. London Bridge's history stretches back to the first crossing over Roman Londinium, close to this site and subsequent wooden and stone bridges have helped modern London become a financial success.

The man holds two fingers up to a foreign tourist to make sure they want two tickets for their destination. The conductor is the last human link with friendly public travel in London. He is usually a friendly face to accompany unsure travellers, often helping them reach their stop and answering questions about the journey with good humour and kindness. Their removal in favour of single driver crews meant that bus travel became more intimidating...

  • Just after heavy rain when the streets of London's West End are wet but brightening after the clouds have passed we look into the windows of a black taxi cab on the busy Charing Cross Road. It is a scene of urban transport and inclement weather. We can see the rough form of the taxi driver at the front of his vehicle but it appears that he is stationary, possibly awaiting for the return of his fare-paying passenger from nearby bookshops such as Foyles in the background. A No-Smoking sticker is on the window and advertising on the side panel shows the arms of an airline passenger sitting in an airliner seat but once the taxi passenger returns, their head will be directly above this. The car's roof is still wet from rain, glistening in the artificial street lights that have turned on during the dark rain storm.

  • Volunteer Guardian Angels patrol the London underground in central London, an experiment in anti-crime in late-80s London. Patrolling the capital's transport system, an Angel stands over two elderly ladies in a dark-lit carriage. The Angels are under the supervision of the organisation's creator Curtis Sliwa, who started the band of youths to help make New York a safer place, - and in London's case in an era before CCTV made travel less secure. The Guardian Angels is a non-profit international volunteer organization of unarmed citizen crime patrollers. The Guardian Angels organization was founded February 13, 1979 in New York City by Curtis Sliwa and has chapters in 15 countries and 144 cities around the world. Sliwa originally created the organization to combat widespread violence and crime on the New York City Subways.

Two fluffy cumulus clouds are stacked vertically above the hump of the airliner's nose to form three white blotches of the same tone. This major hub is mainly for British Airways operations, one of the three busiest airports in the world. When asked what is his favourite building of the Century, architect Sir Norman Foster offered the 747 the Jumbo has since carried 2.2 billion people: 40% of the world's population.   • An elderly lady walks past the intimidating backdrop of tagged walls of Plaistow, an east London station after the crime of defacement and criminal damage to London Underground property has been committed by persons unknown - a persistent problem that costs the transport company network up to £3 million a year to remove. If caught, juvenile delinquents may escape with only a caution because of their age but older ones are prosecuted, though some times after leaving many thousands of tags across their neighbourhood.

  • The massive IRA bomb in Bishopsgate Street in the heart of the City of London destroyed a substantial number of businesses and disrupted a major part of London's financial hub. In the days after the attack on 24th April 1993, we see the pictorial evacuation of smiling faces in a portrait of Pret a Manger staff, the sandwich and lunch chain (from the French 'Ready to Eat'). The image was hung above the premises and construction workers wearing hard hats transport the picture, like hundreds of other nearby businesses whose workers carried away company property, for temporary safe storage.   • Writer, Panos Karnezis in London where he lives and writes. Author of The Maze he is a developing writer of prize-winning fiction, shortlisted for the Whitbread First Novel for the acclaimed Little Infamies. Panos Karnezis was born in Greece in 1967 and came to England in 1992. He studied engineering and worked in industry, then studied for an MA in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia. His first book, Little Infamies (2002) is a collection of connected short stories set in one nameless Greek village, and his second book, The Maze (2004), is a novel set in Anatolia in 1922. It was shortlisted for the 2004 Whitbread First Novel Award. Short stories by Panos Karnezis have been broadcast by BBC Radio 4 and have appeared in Granta, New Writing 11, Prospect, and Areté.
