  • A young boy edges through a gap between some railings and the end of a fallen tree trunk that has fallen across a footpath. The child is on his way to nursery school and the night before strong winds brought down trees in the south London area and cause disruption to transport infrastructure. It is an adventure for this child who isn't bothered in the slightest at this minor inconvenience to his journey, a route he takes with his mother or father every morning. Pushing his bike first, he takes care not to hurt himself on the jagged timber

  • An elderly gentleman has just emerged from a swim in the cold waters off Paignton, the seaside town in Devon, south-west England. Still to towel himself down, he looks chilled to the bone but stands talking to friends out of view. The man wears dark trunks (costume) and has a large belly but otherwise looks fit and healthy, a true picture of health for a man of his age, after swimming in these seas for many years and enjoying the endorphins that are stimulated after wild, outdoor swims.

  • Two old friends regularly spend afternoons sunbathing at Brixton Lido and talk of old times in the sun. The friends gather every morning in the summer at Brockwell (Brixton) Lido. This is a favourite place in the capital for varied groups of people to meet, swim or just hang out like these London taxi drivers who regularly meet for exercise sessions, accumulating sun tans during long periods in the sunshine. Brockwell Lido in Herne Hill SE24 was originally built in 1937 at a time of coastal and city pool-building but went into decline when bathers preferred to holiday in warmer Spain. Its revival happened when local entrepreneurs re-opened the business and it now enjoys a reputation for some of the best urban swims in the UK.

  • A woman farmer taps dripping resin from a rubber tree in a plantation on Pulau Langkawi Island, Malaysia. We see the lady surrounded by even rows of trees, all carefully spaced when planted. Each cool evening the tapper removes a thin layer of bark along a downward half spiral on the tree trunk. She makes an incision in the bark of the tree and fluid then drains into a collecting vessel. If done carefully and with skill, this tapping panel will yield latex for up to 5 years. Malaysia is one of the top exporters of natural rubber. Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 islands in the Andaman Sea, some 30 km off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia.

  • An image of a butterfly is attached to a young tree trunk surrounded by wild flowers in the Olympic Park during the London 2012 Olympics. London's Olympic Park, at just under a square mile, is the largest new park in the city for more than 100 years. The planting of 4,000 trees, 300,000 wetland plants and more than 150,000 perennial plants plus nectar-rich wildflower make for a colourful setting for the Games. This land was transformed to become a 2.5 Sq Km sporting complex, once industrial businesses and now the venue of eight venues including the main arena, Aquatics Centre and Velodrome plus the athletes' Olympic Village. After the Olympics, the park is to be known as Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

  • As a cyclist pedals his way along a path, a man enjoys late afternoon sunshine in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, London England. Seen from a central hill in this Victorian-designed open space, there are the terraced housing and larger tenement buildings behind that rise above the tree line in this undulating landscape. The person on the bicycle has been caught between two tree trunks as he approaches the man relaxing on the park bench and another pedestrian is seen further in the distance walking near a red car. It is scene of serenity among the urban sprawl of a capital city, where quiet places are precious and idyllic corners of greenery are highly-sought after. The Brockwell Hall Park Estate was created and landscaped in 1811. It was purchased for the people of Lambeth & Southwark and opened as a public park in 1892 by Lord Rosebery.

  • It is 07.45 on a dark, wintry morning and from behind, we follow a lone commuter who walks along a snow-covered path in Ruskin Park, an otherwise green space in the south London borough of Herne Hill, Lambeth. Street lights are still illuminating the road in the background and the blue light of early morning has fast becoming another day of snow showers and chilly temperatures. No grit or salt has been sprinkled on this slippery path and the person walks carefully carrying an umbrella from falling sleet which is soon to turn to rain as the temperature rises. Tall 100 year-old mature ash trees whose trunks form an avenue of cover and the commuter proceeds towards their neighbours to the station beyond. A single 4x4 car makes its way through this still quiet street with lights blazing.
