  • It is dawn in Calcutta, West Bengal, India and on the West bank of the Hooghly River the sun is rising from across the Howrah Bridge. Six bathers are either drying themselves after washing in the river, or are undressing to do so. It is a scene of inner-peace, a tranquillity surrounded by the chaotic pace of Indian life in this city. The engineering of the bridge stretches across the water towards the city beyond. The bridge is one of three on the Hooghly River and is a famous symbol of Kolkata and West Bengal. Bearing the daily weight of approximately 150,000 vehicles and 4,000,000 pedestrians. • A boy stands leaning on a hand rail near the top steps at Paignton sea front. At the bottom of the steps and floating face down in the clear, unpolluted water, his arms outstretched, is a diver wearing a wet suit who appears lifeless. It is a scene of ambiguity and the viewer might be confused over whether the diver is in fact dead. It looks as if the diver has drowned but he is only enjoying the buoyancy of the salt sea water. It is a sunny afternoon and the shadows of the steps' rail which zigzags down the concrete steps.

Wearing his bathing costume, a young adventurer clambers over rocks in the Gross Enz river in Germany's Black Forest. The lad of 10 crouches to better balance himself, carefully placing his bare feet on the slippery rock's surface as he emerges from the chilly mountain water. It is high summer and we can see the boy backlit by the glare of strong sunlight in the background. The Gross Enz river rises in Enzklosterle in Baden-Württemberg and is an eventual tributary of the Neckar. Geologically, the Black Forest consists of a cover of sandstone on top of a core of gneiss. During the last glacial period, the Würm glaciation, the Black Forest was covered by glaciers.

  • Three friends in their thirties are hugging each other tightly at Coates Wine Bar on London Wall in the City of London, England. We see their three heads as close as possible accompanied by three wall-mounted lights that are glowing a warm red tone making this a cosy and welcoming atmosphere. The man and one of the girls are chubby with round cheeks and chins and so enjoy the good life.

  • A hunched, homeless elderly man walks along Fenchurch Street in the City of London while younger and affluent office workers saunter past, smiling and with a care in the world. It is a scene of social class division, the contrasts between wealth and poverty, have and have nots, prospects and no hope for the future and of old age and youth. The old man carries a plastic bag with all his belongings and the workers carry their lunch in a paper bag. They are not only smart and he dishevelled but they stand tall and he is stooped, further proof of the hard, demanding life he leads on the capital's streets.

  • A young man in his twenties parties in the evening at a Coates Wine Bar on London Wall in the heart of the City of London, England. Holding a small glass containing a shot of alcohol, he sings at the top of his voice during a Karaoke night. He wears a shirt and tie so probably works in an office. Without a care in the world he has closed his eyes to enjoy the moment of elation and alcohol. It's dark in the bar with few lights in the background but spotlights have little effect to brighten up the scene.

  • Seen from a hillside opposite, with the clear blue backdrop of the snow-covered Himalayan mountain peaks, a Nepalese family crouch on the hilltop to rest during a family walk from their community village near Gorkha, Central Nepal. In the middle of the picture, a young girl twirls and dances across the clearing as her parents and siblings watch, drawfed by the powerfully- dominant range of natural features that form part of the highest altitudes on earth although Gorkha is only 3281 feet (about 1000 meters) above sea level. These peoples' homes cling to the sides of impressive mountains that draw tens of thousands of travellers to this region to trek the paths and conservation sanctuaries of this fast-developing Buddhist and Hindu Kingdom.

  • As a boy swings from a tree, canoeists enjoy a day's paddling down the River Lesse, Belgium's prime kayaking destination in the southern Ardennes region. At Anseremme, south of the town of Dinant, the adventurers negotiate their way down 21 km of gentle fresh water through the beautiful Belgian gorges and forests. Before plunging down a weir (Barrage in French) near a camp site they are pelted by splashing water from campers in the water. The red canoes have been hired for the day from 'Kayaks Ansiaux' and another rival company who rent blue boats. Families and young people make the slow journey along the Lesse, Paddles match the colours of the canoes and they all glint off a strong afternoon sun during the high-season holiday month. Most commonly routes start in Han and go all the way down to Dinant, where the Lesse meets the Meuse.

  • An eleven year-old girl swings with head thrown backwards in a field in Herefordshire, England. It is an image of care-free youth, of a free-spirit and without a care in the world. The young lady gazes skyward as the swing takes her on an upward trajectory, the sun sinking behind distant trees, a scene of splendid inner-peace and tranquillity, disturbed only by the creaking of the rope on the tree above that supports her as she rides. She is staying at this small camp site where tipis and yurts is the theme of this eco-friendly and carbon-neutral holiday.

There is ample covering of moss and lichen on the primeval landscape making it hazardous to conquer but the boy has the stamina to get to the top and continue his walk through this beautiful wilderness. The boy is alone in the picture though accompanied by his family but he seems to mange on his own, capable of finding his own limits of endurance and confidence. • An elderly homeless man walks slowly past a Barclays Bank cash dispenser at which business people are either queueing or typing in their PIN numbers from cash accounts, or simply passing-by. One middle-aged gent stands eyeing the poor man suspiciously while other men of wealth, prospects and prosperity are tall and stand erect in smart suits and polished shoes, the homeless man is hunched and dishevelled, carrying a supermarket bag - perhaps containing all of his worldly goods. It is a tragic scene of extremes between the haves and the have-nots; the rich and poor; between people with hope and those in despair. This is the City of London, near Fenchurch Street Station where the UK's insurance companies are based and it is impossible to know if any of these men in smart clothes are the same age as the poor man.

  • Making their way across a snow-swept road in Norwood, south London, an elderly couple tread warily as the snow turns to slush. It's a bleak, raw morning as the new snowfall has settled on this suburban street where cars are parked on icy kerbs. Wearing sensible hats and coats and non-slip boots the pensioners are vulnerable to icy black spots which may endanger their stability because old people are susceptible to falls and injury at these hazardous times. A very monochrome landscape, we see little colour. Instead it is a scene of jeopardy and of an uncaring society for its older generations.
