  • A partner struggles to lift a lady on a shingle beach up over a coastal groyne in Porlock, Somerset, UK. Giving the lady a much-needed leg-up from the lower level of shingle to the one above, the man bends to haul her up making a funny moment in this coastal landscape. Porlock is a coastal village and civil parish in Somerset, England, situated in a deep hollow below Exmoor, 5 miles (8 km) west of Minehead. The parish, which includes Hawkcombe and Doverhay, has a population of 1,440. The coastline includes shingle ridges, salt marshes and a submerged forest. In 1052 the Saxon king, Harold, landed at Porlock Bay from Ireland, and burnt the town before marching on London

  • Two days after the Irish Republican Army (IRA) exploded a truck bomb on Bishopsgate, an optometrist's business remains open (like the eye illustration at the frontage) but it is boarded up with plywood with the words Open as Usual painted by hand. Debris has been swept up on the pavement awaiting collection but the scene is otherwise as it should. But one person was killed when the one-ton fertiliser bomb detonated directly outside the medieval St Ethelburga's church on 24th April 1993. Buildings up to 500 metres away were damaged, with one and a half million square feet (140,000 m) of office and retail space being affected and over 500 tonnes of glass broken. Costs of repairing the damage was estimated at £350 million. It was possibly the (IRA's) most successful military tactic since the start of the Troubles.

  • Seen from a high viewpoint, three girls jump up to see over the high hedges of Longleat yew Hedge Maze. They cannot otherwise see over the walls of foliage, so tall is the labyrinth of twisty pathways of green foliage. Made up of more than 16,000 English Yews, Longleat's spectacular hedge maze - the world's largest - was first laid out in 1975 by the designer Greg Bright. The Maze covers an area of around 1.48 acres (0.6 hectares) with a total pathway length of 1.69 miles (2.72 kilometres). Unlike most other conventional mazes it's actually three-dimensional.

  • A local man carries electric cabling uphill on the Annapurna Sanctuary trekking route in central Nepal. With few roads that can transport supplies and raw materials up to remote foothill communities, the only way is often to carry what one needs on the back or by yak. The paths are even but often very steep in places so stamina and endurance are needed to get even modest weights uphill. Nepalis up here often want newer technology and basic electricity to power lights and showers although solar power is another answer.

  • We are looking up from the ground to crowds gathered in three levels of a multi-story car park to await athletes pass during the London Marathon. The runners will make their way through the streets of East London beneath these spectators who have been patiently waiting for their friends and families to pass below. It is a great viewpoint from which to view such a sporting spectacle and we are peering up at the supporters leaning against the discoloured (discolored) concrete architecture dating back to the 1970s. It is the best elevated place to witness the race. There are three rows of 5 columns totalling 15 seperate windows and each one is full of families young and old. They resemble the compartments of a garden pet hutch where rabbits are kept in cramped conditions.
