  • As queues of Londoners line up to gain a ride on a bus during a one-day strike by underground tube unions, a lady with head covered in a scarf reads a newspaper at Victoria Station, on 8th May 1989, in London, England. More than 3,000 British Rail employees launched an unofficial overtime ban, walking out in protest at the end of their eight-hour shifts. Thousands were disrupted at Victoria station in central London, on their way to their inner-city destinations. • Reflected in the surrounding pond, we see the glorious Victoria Memorial, the beautiful marble structure built by the British still during the days of the colonial Indian Raj. Couples and families gather in the Memorial's grounds to experience the cool air of late-afternoon near the white, domed building. Built between 1906 and 1921, it is a majestic white marble building at the southern end of the Maidan (literally meaning open field, the largest urban park, a large expansive plain in central Calcutta city. Nowadays it is a museum and group activities are being discouraged due to the fears that pollution will damage this fine structure that honours Queen Victoria, then Empress of India.

  • The unrecognisable driver of a number 38 red London bus which is passing between sunlight and shadow, gives a thumbs up signal to another road-user in the streets of Victoria. On the side of the vehicle's bodywork are the destinations the 38 route passes: Hackney, Dalston Junction, Angel, Piccadilly Circus and Victoria Station. The bus is a traditional design called a Routemaster which has been in service on the capital's roads since 1954 and is nowadays only seen on heritage routes. From any angle, the bus is easily recognisable as that classic British transport icon.

  • On a hot afternoon on Calcutta's Maidan, an Indian lady catches a frisbee disc in both hands in front of the glorious Victoria Memorial, the beautiful marble structure built by the British still during the days of the colonial Indian Raj. The lady is lit with golden light and her bottle green sari stands out from a background tree. She grimaces as she stretches to hold on to the frisbee and there are many hundreds of families and groups in the background, nearer to the white, domed building. • Commuters to-and-fro in the heat of a city summer during a 3-day underground tube strike in September 2007. This is Victoria mainline station during a summer heatwave. It's a transport hub for tube lines, buses and overground train routes and we see masses of pedestrians and buses reflected in the glass of a bush shelter window. As a result of the industrial action, the buses are full so the quickest way of reaching one's destination is to walk. An official points out directions, someone shields his eyes from the sun, a lady walks with her hands in pockets, the 239 bus to Victoria approaches and sightseeing tours sign advertises tickets. People are seen in differing scales and sizes.

  • A couple of mixed-race have put their heads through the apertures made in a painting that depicts Prince Albert and Queen Victoria, on the Palace Pier at Brighton, on the south coast of England. The faces peep through this traditional attraction that few can resist, even in the 21st century. The man's face looks disturbingly incongruous in the place where the Prince Consort's white German character would be. There is a message here of a changing multi-cultural British society where these friends or partners are from other ethnic backgrounds and where mixed-marriages are now commonplace, as opposed to the Victorian era when attitudes to racism and race-relations were vastly different.

  • A male passenger is asleep with his mouth open, leaning his head on a bus window as it passes the background pillars of the Bank of England in the financial district City of London. On the exterior of the bus are the words: "We've got to get this city to work," an advertising slogan used by London Transport to seduce commuters from their cars and back on to public transport which is one of the most expensive world capitals on which to travel by bus, train or underground. This style of bus is a traditional design called a 'Routemaster' which has been in service on the capital's roads since 1954 and is nowadays only seen on heritage routes such as these destination: Victoria, Bond Street, Oxford Street, Holborn and Bank (the Bank of England). From any angle, the bus is easily recognisable as that classic British transport icon. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. The City of London is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City as it is known, is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. London Bridge's history stretches back to the first crossing over Roman Londinium, close to this site and subsequent wooden and stone bridges have helped modern London become a financial success.

  • The rare Victoria Cross is worn on the chest of the celebrated Nepali war veteran Bhanu Bhagta Gurung (also written Bhanubhakta), an ex-soldier of the British Gurkha regiment who in the second world war, earned his medals from repeated bravery against Japanese positions in Burma. He sits here on the terrace of his home, above the misty valley of Gorkha, Central Nepal. He is one of the last survivors of the remarkably brave men who helped defeat the enemy in the jungles of south-east Asia. Gurung is the name of his Nepalese tribe (like the Sherpas who also come from the high Himalayan Kingdom). His company commander described him as "a smiling, hard-swearing and indomitable soldier who in a battalion of brave men was one of the bravest". Born September 1921 - died March 1 2008.

  • Commuters walk about in all directions in the heat of summer in the city during a 3-day underground tube strike in September 2007. As a result of the industrial action, the buses are full so the quickest way of reaching one's destination is to walk. People near Victoria Station, a transport hub for tube lines, buses and overground train routes so we see businessmen in dark suits during the heatwave, women striding along towards their transport home and we look up at them from a low-angle in the street. One man seems to pause from indecision while others are more confident about their fate and direction in life.

Daylight floods in through overhead skylight roof glass as shoppers walk past local ladies fashion displays seen behind beautiful curved windows, in the style of late 19th century. Tiles flooring acts as a pavement to resembled an upper-class covered street to keep visitors dry from frequent coastal showers. The shops are local too - without branded chains occupying the site and forcing hardship on local businesses.
