  • Seen from slightly behind, a young woman stands taking shelter from early evening rain in Goodge Street, London England. Holding a lit cigarette in her left hand and with an unused ashtray to her right, she is chatting with friends who are also enjoying a relaxing hour after work. Under the UK Government's recent laws on smoking in public places, the work mates are forced outside the pub to smoke on the street in a special area away from the anti-smoking people indoors. Lit by glowing red lights that also provide warmth on this chilly January night, the friends are comfortable in their own company.

  • After their flight from Italy where they have been performing a series of summer concerts, some young musicians stop to await instructions from their accompanying teacher at Oakham School, England. Amid the hectic concourse of Heathrow airport's Terminal 5, a cellist has removed her precious string instrument to inspect it for damage after its shipment in the hold of a British Airways flight. As their friends look on, a fellow-player helps re-wrap the cello in a pink towel before the whole group re-assemble again to begin their evening journey home. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).

  • "A Day Away from Choosing a Name." A baby girl of only two weeks old cranes her neck around to see where her mother's soothing voice is coming from. Wrapped up in a checked blanket to keep her snug and warm, she is learning to recognise familiar sounds, focus on close objects and learn about her own small world. She has a round face with a squashed, button nose and has opened her mouth to bend round in her mum's direction. Her name has yet to be recorded with the local register office, a legal requirement that needs completeting within six weeks after a birth. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • Four friends gather every morning in the summer at Brockwell (Brixton) Lido. This is a favourite place in the capital for varied groups of people to meet, swim or just hang out like these London taxi drivers who regularly meet for exercise sessions, accumulating sun tans during long periods in the sunshine. Bare except for their costumes, they stretch and yawn, read a newspaper and lean against a railing all the while swapping anecdotes and complaining grumpily about the state of the world near a brick wall that retains heat. Brockwell Lido in Herne Hill SE24 was originally built in 1937 at a time of coastal and city pool-building but went into decline when bathers preferred to holiday in warmer Spain. Its revival happened when local entrepreneurs re-opened the business and it now enjoys a reputation for some of the best urban swims in the UK.

  • "Anywhere between 3-5am." A mother has brought her three and a half month-old infant into bed and comforts her new baby back to sleep in bed by holding her hand at dawn, after a broken night's rest. We see large adult's fingers encircling the tiny digits of the baby girl who is mercifully sound asleep again, instinctively aware of love and trust. It is a picture of protective parenthood, of a close bond between mother and child in a safe, cosy, warm and idyllic place within the loving family home. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • An elderly lady makes her way from her community village Memorial Hall which she has been volunteering this winter morning as part of a charity funds raising event. The lady might be old and frail but her spirit is such that she still finds the time to integrate into community life and remains active despite her years. Walking beneath the wrought-iron sign in Cleeve Prior, Worcestershire, she edges under tentatively to make her way home wearing a quilted coat and her wedding ring on her gnarled hands. A chilly late-morning sun shines across the architecture of the building and this is the look of a lady happy with her morning's activities with fellow parishioners.

  • A man of Afro-Caribbean birth, clutches at his scarf to keep out freezing temperatures during a cold snap in south London. Falling snow has settled on the man's black hair and even turned his eyelashes white after his walk from home to a local bus stop from where he is trying to commute to work. Because of skin colour, the white snowflakes make this picture a largely monochrome scene, adding to the bleak sense of wintry conditions. He is clearly unprepared for winter, wearing neither hat nor gloves and looks chilled to the bone thanks to the heat he's losing through his head and upper body. The climate of this part of the northern hemisphere can be ferocious for those ill-equipped or at the very least, unpleasant for those from warmer parts of the world.

  • An ostrich chick stands alone in a private pen, beneath a heat lamp at the ostrich farm belonging to Robert and Nina Bailey near Chepstow, Wales. The reddish glow from the heat source concentrates life-giving energy into the young bird, helping it survive the first three months after hatching. Rearing these birds is a specialist and very expensive business but Ostrich meat is a South African delicacy, used for Biltong. Nutritionists promote it as a more healthy alternative because it is higher in protein and lower in fat and cholesterol. An ostrich lays an egg every other day, of which 40 to 80% are fertile. In the wild there is a 95% failure rate but using an incubator like this almost guarantees total success. Its latin name, 'Struthio camelus', is the largest of living birds with some males reaching a height of 8 ft (244 cm) and weighing 200 to 300 lb (90-135 kg). In the wild, the polygamous male has from two to six females in his flock. The cock scoops out a hollow for the eggs, which weigh nearly 3 lb (1.35 kg) each. One of the females incubates the eggs during the day, and the cock takes over at night. On the savannah they can run at 40mph (64 kph) for 10 hours though their top speed can reach 80mph. During the 19th-century vogue for ostrich plumes, farms were established in South Africa and later in North America, Australia, and Europe; after World War I fashions changed and the industry collapsed.

  • A young professional couple lie in the sun and share a humerous moment. They sit with their backs to intricate and delicate tiling which depict the Spanish province of Coruna, at the Plaza de España, Seville, Andalucia, Spain. The lady is sitting with her partner's head in her lap, indicating romance and contentedness as she suppresses a giggle. They are both lit by strong sunshine and gives the impression of a perfect moment in their loving relationship. • Making their way across a snow-swept road in Norwood, south London, an elderly couple tread warily as the snow turns to slush. It's a bleak, raw morning as the new snowfall has settled on this suburban street where cars are parked on icy kerbs. Wearing sensible hats and coats and non-slip boots the pensioners are vulnerable to icy black spots which may endanger their stability because old people are susceptible to falls and injury at these hazardous times. A very monochrome landscape, we see little colour. Instead it is a scene of jeopardy and of an uncaring society for its older generations.

  • High above the streets of Old Lisbon, we see a Portuguese lady leaning out of her window to hang out her washing on the line that is attached to her home's exterior wall in the Bairro Alto district - or Upper City - the oldest of Lisbon's residential quarters. Items of underwear, socks and other miscellaneous clothing have been strung out on the line that is now pegged along the crumbling wall's surface with faded, peeling plaster and paint. A TV aerial has also been fixed precariously by the window and it's shadow can be seen in the sunshine which is strong and side-lighting the scene which has a warm, morning glow about it. Lisbon's Bairro Alto quarter is located above Baixa and developed in the 16th Century. Suffering very little damage in the earthquake of 1755, it remains the area of most character and renowned for its residential and working quarter for craftsmen and shopkeepers. At night, life takes on a diferent personality when bars and up until the 60s, prostitution gave the district a bad reputation in the past but nowadays tourists and the chic frequent its streets and traditional 'Fado' (classical Portuguese opera) bars. ...

  • Good-looking trendy young people spill out of a pub one sunny afternoon in fashionable Notting Hill in West London. Their confidence and sense of fun and living for the moment is seen in their clothes and style. But out-of-sight around the corner on this street stands a rather nervous-looking poor woman, an elderly lady perhaps in her sixties who is holding some shopping bags with her coat buttoned up, despite being warm outside. Her demeanour is that of tiredness and hardship - the opposite of the young generation. There is a wide generation gap here: The division of wealth, health and outlook between these two demographic groups which also symbolises a modern Britain, used to the class system that is alive and well.

  • Carers and elderly people from a nearby residential home take a daily walk to the seafront in Frinton, UK. As part of a daily walk, some important exercise for these still active pensioners, the uniformed staff take their charges out towards the seafront from the warmth of their home left behind. Walking slowly towards the promenade in Frinton-on-Sea in Essex. Some may be just unfit and others perhaps slightly confused or suffering from dementia or possibly just old and tired from the hardships after Britain at war. • A wife gives an tight, affectionate hug to her husband on the Promenade at North Bay, Scarborough, North Yorkshire. There is no such showing of reciprocated love from the man who continues to read a cricket report in the sports page of his tabloid newspaper. She is wearing a floral summer top and he is topless. In the background we see a bustling sea front. People are walking along the Prom, enjoying the sun and warmth of this usually chilly area of Britain.

  • Typical old Alpine timber hut and Mount Sassongher (2,665m) above Corvara in the Dolomites, south Tyrol, northern Italy. The oldest barns in this region are called Tierstaller and follow the same basic design: That of for warmth in the long, hard winters in the mountains and for coolness in the hot summers. But farming has changed dramatically in the Alps. Barns reflect and accompany this transformation. In villages and open landscapes, more and more barns are abandoned, used for other purposes, or falling into disrepair. Contemporary farmers build new barns for stockbreeding, fruit storage, and wine pressing. San Leonardo is in the municipality of Badia populated mostly by people who speak the ancient Ladin language.
