  • Moss and weeds now grow where once B-24 Liberators of the 392nd US Air Force bomb Group took-off to attack German cities during WW2. Land once again owned by local farmers, the airfields of Norfolk and Suffolk in south-east England were home to 85,000 US personnel from 1942-45.

  • Rotting in the undergrowth near the harbour at Newport, Pembrokeshire, North-east Wales, lies an old rowing boat. The timbers are succumbing to the weather and tidal waters of the River Nevern and the boat is barely afloat in the waterlogged terrain. Weeds and other vegetation is gradually overtaking its integrity and its wooden frame is host to an abundance of plant and wildlife. It can no longer serve as a vessel of the river as it is a wreck that nature is reclaiming and soon to hide completely from view.

  • A customized caravan sits in the damp woods at the Faslane Peace Camp, Argyll and Bute, Scotland. Matt Bury, 52, is one of the camp's 10 full time residents and has been living in this trailer for a year. Painted harlequin-styled diamonds adorn the walls of the van in a personal artistic statement. Calor gas bottles lie on the ground and weeds grow around this semi-permanent site. Faslane Peace Camp is a makeshift political activists' site alongside HM Naval Base Clyde where Trident nuclear deterrent missiles and Vanhuard Class submarines dock. The camp has been occupied continuously, in a few different locations since 12 June 1982. Image taken for the 'UK at Home' book project published 2008.

  • A pair of womens' red shoes have been left on a white wall in south London. With rough plaster on the top of the wall and weeds growing at the foot of the dividing section of cement, the red shows look like Judy Garland's Dorothy's shoes in the Wizard of Oz movie. There is also a tradition of film titles, music and a fairy tale by Hand Christian Anderson that are inspired by Red Shoes as a cultural theme.

  • A deserted landscape of a street and overgrown paths and empty housing in the former Russian Soviet army camp in occupied East Germany (ex-GDR/DDR), on 16th June 19990, on Halb Insel Wustrow, near Rostock, Germany. Wustrow was once a WW2 German anti-aircraft artillery position then housing civilian refugees before the eventual Soviet occupation of the former DDR during the Cold War, up until 1990 and the fall of communism and the Berlin Wall. The camp was ransacked and all its assets stripped before its desertion that summer and is a reminder of a fallen ideology

  • A filthy alleyway in Toxteth, Liverpool amid socially-deprived streets and terraced housing. Graffiti of girls' names has been painted on to the brick wall of a tenement building but is now peeling off. Weeds have grown around the cobbled pavement and the windows are boarded up in a landscape of urban dereliction and social depravity.

  • Beneath an ugly breeze block concrete wall, a couple are enjoying their holiday in the English seaside town of Paignton, Devon. Sitting in striped deckchairs they are both curiously touching their own genital areas between their legs, perhaps both scratching an itch. The lady in sunglasses wearing a floral dress on the left looks guilty while her topless male partner appears more amused by the interruption. In this depressing corner of Paignton, also called the English Riviera, the grey construction behind them is a grim reminder of what it is often like to holiday in one's own home country where few exotic luxuries are found. Such squalor is unfortunately common around the UK and a reason why people take their vacations abroad. Even the grass below them is bare with weeds growing and soil at the foot of the wall.
