  • It is dawn in Calcutta, West Bengal, India and on the West bank of the Hooghly River the sun is rising from across the Howrah Bridge. The working day is beginning for this pedestrian seen carrying a large, heavy tank full of liquids, possibly on his way to market or a shop in Central Calcutta. Steady, he balances it weight though he can barely stretch up to grip the carrying handles. The bridge's engineering stretches across the water as the humanity cross to their businesses and markets. The British-built bridge is one of three on the Hooghly River and is a famous symbol of Kolkata and West Bengal. Bearing the daily weight of approximately 150,000 vehicles and 4,000,000 pedestrians. It is one of the longest bridges of its type in the world. The Hooghly River is an approximately 260 km long distributary of the Ganges River.

  • "Garden ballet." With hands outstretched, a ten month-old infant supports her weight on some garden chairs as she learns to stand on her own two feet. Without the strength in her legs, she loses her balance and her mother stands behind holding her daughter by the waist preventing her from falling over. It is a warm summer afternoon with both mother and child barefoot on the back garden patio and we see the experience of an adult encouraging a developing human being with the confidence to stand erect with back straight. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • A group of red uniformed meat market traders manhandling joints of pork from the back of a meat wagon at Macau's main meat market, on the Rua Sul do Mercado de Sao Domingos, just off the Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro, in Central Macau. The men have on hooded red tunics that hide the bloodstains of dead animal carcasses, a very practical choice of colour. One man has half a pig on his shoulders while another holds a leg in his left hand. The animal carcasses look heavy and they are both struggling under their weight. There is much more meat to be offloaded from the truck and the men queue up to take their turn and remove them for sale inside the market building. Besides historical Chinese and Portuguese world-heritage relics, Macau's biggest attraction is its gaming business. Its gambling revenue in 2006 weighed in at a massive £3.6bn - about £100m more than Las Vegas. Administered by Portugal until 1999, it was the oldest European colony in China, dating back to the 16th century. The administrative power over Macau was transferred to the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1999, 2 years after Hong Kong's own handover. Macau's name is derived from A-Ma-Gau or Place of A-Ma and this temple dedicated to the seafarers' goddess dates from the early 16th century.

With her hands on generous hips, a woman wearing a red dress stands as a leader of the evening makes her calculations. Much depends on the womens' success to reach their individual targets - the ethos in Weightwatchers being to reward the good. As they say of their ProPoints plan: ".. it is a fantastic counting system that allows you to eat what you like, when you like, until you reach your daily total. It guides you to make healthier food choices, eating more of the things that are good for you and for weight loss, and less of the things that aren't."

  • A local man carries electric cabling uphill on the Annapurna Sanctuary trekking route in central Nepal. With few roads that can transport supplies and raw materials up to remote foothill communities, the only way is often to carry what one needs on the back or by yak. The paths are even but often very steep in places so stamina and endurance are needed to get even modest weights uphill. Nepalis up here often want newer technology and basic electricity to power lights and showers although solar power is another answer.
