  • Young smoking man of today and a lost generation of youth. In the 100th year after WW1 started, the war memorial heroes in Cornhill, City of London remembering those killed in the First World War, lost in the trenches and the fields of Flanders from 1914-19. Dedicated by the City of London, the UK capital's financial and historic heart. Two soldiers face away from each other with rifles between their boots, they represent a lost generation when the nation's youth sacrificed their lives in the 20th century's first great conflict. The inscription says that their names will live for evermore.

  • An anonymous youth sprays graffiti from an aerosol spraycan onto a west London wall. .Viewed from a low angle, an unidentified youth is seen spraying graffiti art on to a wall in the Notting Hill area of West London, England. We see his partially-obscured face lit from behind with a strong amount of flash which throws a well-defined shadow of his hand holding a spray can. It is a chilly night and the boy's breath is seen against the frosty night air. His graffiti art has taken him some hours to spray on this white wall and shows a glossy finish. The picture is anonymous because of the young man's face is unseen and generic, because we don't see where the wall might be located.

  • The words Inspire a Generation for the main Olympic slogan on a sign in the Olympic Park during the London 2012 Olympics. Stretched across a bridge near the Riverbank Arena where the Hockey games are played, the British Olympic organisation (LOCOG) hope that as the tally for gold medals climbed, British youth will be inspired enough to take up sport when declining spending and interest has been a national issue. In times of austerity, schools and sports clubs had their budgets for sport reduced and Team GB's success raised more concerns for the future of British youth as potential medal winners.

  • An unidentified youth is seen climbing over a high security fence into a derelict basketball court in the Notting Hill area of West London, England. Half-way over the wire netting, the young man has put his right leg over the top to haul himself over the high barrier. In the distance we see the graffiti left by other kids, sprayed on to the concrete walls of the former sports place. This is an inner-city environment where lawless youth crime is prevalent.

  • The fishing fleet of Tarbert on Scotland's Mull of Kintyre lies moored at the dock of this pretty coastal village in the Western Isles. Their colourful hulls shine in late afternoon sunshine as they are tied up awaiting another outing at sea to provide for this small fishing community a living and a livelihood for its families. But in the foreground sit a young couple whose prospects are not so positive: they rest on a bench in silhouette, one smoking a cigarette while turned to the friend who stares out to distant rolling hills. It is a scene of hopelessness that reflects modern life for the youth in remote communities where jobs are scarce and their futures far from secure. In an otherwise idyllic Scottish landscape, we guess at the disintegration of society up here - the scourge of economic downturn and future social problems.

  • "Crooked Lady." A twelve month-old girl who has recently learned to walk proudly strides past an elderly lady with balancing arms outstretched while at the Dulwich Show in South London. There is a marked difference between the youthful, upright posture of the young girl to the hunched and bent stance of the old woman who stands supporting herself on a brolley. It is a picture that compares youth with old age, the delight that a person of later years shows to a child whose life reaches far ahead. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • The Mr Chelsea Body Beautiful talent competition is held on the Kings Road in London. Entrants are handsome males and girls showing their muscles and well-trimmed bodies. We see hairy chests, pectorals and biceps on-show by these young exhibitionists who parade themselves in the open-air. Slightly behind them there are also two elderly ladies looking like sisters or perhaps twins. They were once beautiful themselves and sit eagerly on a bench against a wall peering at the handsome young men, wishing they were young again. One holds a walking stick and the other grasps a bottle of wine. It is a scene of young and old, of youth and ageing beauty.

With complete trust, she lets herself go and yields to her own natural buoyancy as she floats amid this seemingly wide ocean of chlorinated water belonging to a hotel on Ocean Drive. We see her bright red costume clearly against the complimentary prime colour green in a vibrant display from the spectrum. It is a scene of love and confidence, of youth and health.

  • As if separated by many decades, we see an older generation beach guard from a bygone era and a much younger lifeguard, both resting on the seafront of the posh Essex seaside town of Frinton-on-Sea, England. If simply comparing the colour schemes of the past, to the modern day, we might guess that in the gentleman on the right's day, people wore more formal blues, with collar and tie and polished shoes on the hottest day - reminiscent of Victorian times when pomp and tradition rather than practicalities were important . Nowadays, complimentary reds and yellows adorn the uniform of the lad trained in water injuries and life-saving. He is barefoot and sits comfortably against the sea defence wall in peak cap and t-shirt. This is a scene describing the generation gap, of youth versus experience - the classic English seaside holiday.

He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1933 and held in solitary confinement for eleven years, before being shot in Buchenwald on Adolf Hitler's orders in 1944. The Ernst Thälmann Pioneer Organisation, consisting of the Young Pioneers and the Thälmann Pioneers, was a youth scouting-styled organisation of schoolchildren aged 6 to 14, in East Germany. Its motto was" "Für Frieden und Sozialismus seid bereit - Immer bereit" ("For peace and socialism be ready - always ready") but the Pioneers were disbanded in 1989 after early protests here in Leipzig at the same time as the Berlin Wall and the Socialist state's fall.

  • For their daily river washing ritual, young Nepali boys bathe in the river Seti Gandaki in a valley side near the British Gurkha Regiment's army camp at Pokhara during their recruitment selection held ever year, 16th January 1997, in Pokhara, Nepal. <br />
After a gruelling series of physical tests to eliminate the weaker and less able candidates. 60,000 boys aged between 17-22 (or 25 for those educated enough to become clerks or communications specialists) report to designated recruiting stations in the hills each November, most living from altitudes ranging from 4,000-12,000 feet. After initial selection, 7,000 are accepted for further tests from which 700 are sent down here to Pokhara in the shadow of the Himalayas. Only 160 of the best boys succeed in the journey to the UK. The Gurkhas have been supplying youth for the British army since the Indian Mutiny of 1857. (Photo by Richard Baker / In Pictures via Getty Images)

  • A middle-aged couple sleep on a blanket as a young boy digs a hole on the sandy beach at Scarborough. The generation gap is shown here with the older people unconscious after a day in sea air while the lad with the energy of youth puts much effort into shovelling sand from the growing hole. If they are related, they are oblivious as to the dangers of excavating holes on tidal beaches.

  • A newly-recruited Nepali boy is about to leave his homeland for the UK, where the British army is to make him a fully-trained soldier in the Gurkha Regiment. Daubed with saffron and paint, the sign of good luck on a journey to come, he stands with absolute pride with garlands of fresh flowers draped around his neck by well-wishing relatives before they wave good bye to their son or brother for his two years absence away from home. Some 60,000 young Nepalese boys aged between 17 - 22 (or 25 for those educated enough to become clerks or communications specialists) report to designated recruiting stations in the hills each November, most living from altitudes ranging from 4,000 - 12,000 feet.

  • Two obese parents and their normal weight child sit with their backs to the viewer on the edge of a pool on the open deck of the Fun Ship Ecstasy belonging to Carnival Cruises, as it sails through the Gulf of Mexico. The two adults and the girl wear bathing costumes and their tanned skin is exposed to the sun. They are sitting on the rectangular pool-side tiles taking in the atmosphere and the blue water that they're facing. We see the comparison of healthy youth and oversized adulthood, the parents' wide posteriors dwarf the normal size of their child.
