  • On the edge of an old Soviet parade ground, peeling murals show the physical style of Russian marching techniques seen in this army boot camp in the former East German peninsular called Halbinsel Wustrow near Rostock. For the benefit of recruits or as reminders of Soviet discipline, the picture shows a soldier marching in that unmistakable goose-stepping style reminiscent of the Nazi era, with high forward kicks and a strenuous arm movement to the chest as seen in iconic May Day celebrations in Red Square. Wustrow was once a WW2 German anti-aircraft artillery position then housed civilian refugees before the eventual Soviet occupation of the former DDR during the Cold War, up until 1990 and the fall of communism and the Berlin Wall. The camp was ransacked and all its assets stripped before its desertion that summer and is a reminder of a fallen ideology

  • Seventeen officer cadets march in line wearing full dress uniform with their rifles on shoulders past guests and VIPs at their passing out parade in the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. The recently-graduated soldiers march in a near-perfect line looking over their right shoulders towards their commanding officers and VIP guests which sometimes includes Her Majesty the Queen. We see every face clearly and notice their different heights and sizes. Sharp focus is centred on the smallest man in the parade. The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS), commonly known simply as Sandhurst, is the British Army officer initial training centre. Sandhurst is prestigious and has had many famous alumni including Sir Winston Churchill, King Abdullah II of Jordan, Sultan Qaboos of Oman and, more recently, Prince Harry and Prince William. All British Army officers, and many from elsewhere in the world, are trained at Sandhurst. RMA Sandhurst was formed in 1947, from a merger of the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich (which trained officers for the Royal Artillery and Royal Engineers from 1741 to 1939) and the Royal Military College at Sandhurst.

  • Young teenage students march against government education cuts in Regent Street. Holding a variety of placards that denounce the coalition government's policy of charging extra higher-education tuition fees, the atmosphere is excited and happy. But tens of thousands of students and school pupils walked out of class, marched, and occupied buildings around the country in the second day of mass action within a fortnight to protest at education cuts and higher tuition fees. There were isolated incidents of violence and skirmishes with police, mostly in central London among the 130,000 students.

  • British army Parachute Regiment recruits are suffering from fatigue on a rigorous forced march conducted as a squad, over undulating terrain with each candidate carrying a Bergen (backpack) weighing 35 pounds (plus water) and a weapon. The lads are slowly buckling under the weight of backpack Bergens and weapons carried on a hot day and without drinking enough fluids. The 10-mile march must be completed in 1 hour and 50 minutes and it forms part of the 14-week long Pegasus (P) Company selection programme that recruits wanting to join the British Army's elite Parachute Regiment, held regularly at Catterick army barracks in Yorkshire, need to pass (with other tests) before earning the right to wear the esteemed maroon beret.

  • Young Nepali boys in army red march though a Pokhara street after being recruited for the Gurkha Regiment in the Btitish army. This recruitment test for the Gurkha Regiment is part of a tough endurance series to find physically perfect specimens for British army infantry training. For example they will need to perform 25 straight-kneed sit-ups at a 45° slant both within 60 seconds to pass. 60,000 boys aged between 17-22 (or 25 for those educated enough to become clerks or communications specialists) report to designated recruiting stations in the hills each November, most living from altitudes ranging from 4,000-12,000 feet. After initial selection, 7,000 are accepted for further tests from which 700 are sent down here to Pokhara in the shadow of the Himalayas. Only 160 of the best boys succeed in the journey to the UK. The Gurkhas have been supplying youth for the British army since the Indian Mutiny of 1857.

  • The white helmets of the Royal Marines who march through the City of London during the annual Lord Mayor's Show. The new Mayor's procession consists of a 3-mile, 150-float parade of commercial and military organisations going back to medieval times. This is the oldest and longest civic procession in the world that has survived the Plague and the Blitz, today one of the best-loved pageants. Henry Fitz-Ailwyn was the first Lord Mayor (1189-1212) and ever since, eminent city fathers (and one woman) have taken the role of the sovereign's representative in the City - London's ancient, self-governing financial district. The role ensured the King had an ally within the prosperous enclave.

  • Angry residents from Kent march over the river Thames and past Parliament to protest over the planned high-speed (TGV-style) rail link from London to the south-east coast, on 5th August 1989, in London, England. Locals from the Darenth Valley in rural Kent, against the forthcoming Channel Tunnel rail link organised their own campaign to reverse decisions by British Rail to cut a new rail link through their community. British Rail announced that 150mph TGV trains would travel through their rural Kent countryside, forcing residents to sell their homes within a 240 metre corridor to the rail line, at great loss while splitting up the community. • Accompanied by a City of London police officer, members of a Druid sect walk through the street as part of their Spring Equinox celebrations. The Ancient Druids were once Judges, Kingmakers, Scientists, Magicians and Priests and their modern counterparts may be viewed likewise. The word itself comes through both Brythonic tongues (Cornish and Welsh) meaning either knowledge of the oak or wizard - or wise man in Gaelic (Irish and Scots.) Druidry itself is both a philosophical viewpoint and a religious world view, although many Druids view themselves also as Pagan Priests. A druid was a member of the priestly class in Gaul and possibly other parts of Celtic western Europe during the Iron Age. Following the invasion of Gaul by the Roman Empire, the druids were suppressed by the Roman government.

  • The massive IRA bomb in Bishopsgate Street in the heart of the City of London destroyed a substantial number of businesses and disrupted a major part of London's financial hub. In the days after the attack on 24th April 1993, we see the pictorial evacuation of smiling faces in a portrait of Pret a Manger staff, the sandwich and lunch chain (from the French 'Ready to Eat'). The image was hung above the premises and construction workers wearing hard hats transport the picture, like hundreds of other nearby businesses whose workers carried away company property, for temporary safe storage. This store was also badly damaged and had to be transferred to another location. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. It is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City as it is known, is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area.
