  • During the evening rush hour, hundreds of rail commuters are queueing to board a Thameslink train which has just arrived on the platform at Farringdon Station in Clerkenwell, London England. Standing 10-deep, they patiently wait the next ride home southbound during a tube strike forced the closure of underground stations and making workers take alternative routes. Looking down from a high bridge we see the train's roof and the heads of those delayed and inconvenienced. It is another miserable journey home.

  • A modern airliner passes over the renovated control tower that once saw aviation heroes such as Charles Lindbergh arrive after his historic transatlantic flight to Paris, on the site of the former London (Croydon) airfield, once the location of the first international passenger services from England in the 1930s. The airport's terminal building and control tower were completed in 1928; the old wooden air traffic control and Customs building was demolished. The new buildings and layout began operations on 20 January 1928.

  • Separated by four floors, two employees of the auditing company Ernst & Young, make their way along walkways in the main atrium of E & Y's European headquarter offices at More London, London England. Striding confidently between offices, the two people are unaware of each other's presence but make their way from right to left of this tall, upright scene of modernity. The senior person on top may have an advantage from better opportunities, the low-ranking worker below may be needing to rise up the ranks. Morning sunlight floods through the green tinted glass that overlooks Tower Bridge on the River Thames. The term atrium comes from Latin: a large and light central hall or reception of a house where guests were greeted. The depth and height of all levels from near the top to almost the bottom give a sense of vertigo, a dizzying perspective. .

So fast is this mode of transport, it blurs past this cold, desolate spot where only one nearby house is next to the trackside. Intercepting sewers constructed between 1859 and 1865 were fed by 450 miles (720 km) of main sewers that in turn conveyed the contents of some 13,000 miles (21,000 km) of smaller local sewers using 318m bricks, 880,000 cubic yards of concrete and mortar and excavation of over 3.5m tonnes of earth.

Seen from below, the passing Jumbo takes-off and climbs under full take-off power over the surrounding airfield security fence. Its razor-wire is an effective deterrent against protesters or terrorists and symbolises the lengths that airport authorities (in this case BAA) need go to to ensure their property is safe. The aircraft is seen almost entangled in the secure wire as if passing through the mesh. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).

  • As child visitors negotiate their way through a hole, a musician plays the tuba within the art installation sculpture known as Colourscape on Clapham Common, South London, England. Created by an outside overhead sun shining through a collection of large, inflatable PVC domes, the man and other visitors wear coloured capes and walk slowly through tunnels, enticing customers to ecperience vivid colour while emitting eerie sound from voices, brass and string instruments. Designed by Simon Desorgher & Lawrence Casserley, Colourscape celebrated its 10th year of installation in Clapham in 2004. Colourscape's charitable Trust, Nettlefold Arts, was founded in 1988, with the purpose of presenting contemporary music, related arts and educational events, in innovative ways.
