  • Accompanied by a pianist, south Londoners sit outside their rail station on whose wall is a screening of the silent film Easy Street starring a former local boy, Charlie Chaplin, kicking off a series of the Free Film Festival in Herne Hill in the London borough of Lambeth. There is no official record of his birth although Chaplin believed he was born at East Street in nearby Walworth. Chaplin's childhood was fraught with poverty and hardship, making his eventual trajectory 'the most dramatic of all the rags to riches stories ever told'. Easy Street is a 1917 short comedy. In the film, the police are failing to maintain law and order and so it is Chaplin, as the Little Tramp character, who steps forward (rather reluctantly) to rid the street of bullies, help the poor, save women from madmen and generally keep the peace.

Shut by Lambeth council and occupied by protesters for 10 days in April, the library which was bequeathed by American philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie has been locked ever since because, say Lambeth austerity cuts are necessary even though 24hr security make it more expensive to keep closed than open for the local community. A gym that locals say they don't want or need is planned to replace the working library and while some of the 20,000 books on shelves will remain, no librarians will be present to administer it.

  • Residents and campaigners against the closure by Lambeth council of Carnegie Library protest outside the borough’s planning committee meeting, on 7th February 2017, at Bolney Meadow Community Centre, south London, England. Leisure contractor GLL were given the go-ahead to run the 100 year-old, listed building in Herne Hill as a pay-to-go gym in the excavated basement, a facility that few locals want, preferring a fully-stocked library with books and librarians. £12,600 was donated by the American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie to help build the library that opened in 1906. It is a fine example of Edwardian civic architecture, built with red Flettan bricks and terracotta, listed as Grade II in 1981. Shut by Lambeth council and occupied by protesters for 10 days in April, the library has been locked ever since because, say Lambeth austerity cuts are necessary. 24hr security on the building has been more expensive to keep closed than open.
