  • Standing late at night in the doorway of a Soho nightclub in Old Compton Street, London England, a bouncer provides security for his employer. Otherwise known as doormen or door supervisers, these usually hardened men offer a deterrent for anyone causing trouble inside ot out of licensed bars and clubs such as this. Lit from overhead spotlights, he looks menacing and capable of street violence - enough to urge troublemakers to move on quick. reflected in the glass is Ed's Diner a well-known eaterie in this street. Soho is known as a rather seedy but vibrant area of London's West End and late-night social disorder fuelled by excessive alcohol is pretty much normal.

  • Standing against strong Autumnal afternoon light, two police officers from an unknown constabulary, guard one entrance to the venue where the Conservative (Tory) Party Conference is being held, at the Bournemouth International Centre that overlooks the sea in Dorset, England. In 1990, the terrorist threat came from Irish Republicans (IRA) rather than Islamist extemists and credible threats proved to be correct, that these idealists wanted to assassinate Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Police cordons were therefore an efficient method of controlling and restricting access to those without the proper delegates' or media accreditation. The most striking figure is the male officer in the foreground whose profile is prominent because of his traditional police helmet.

  • Near the junction of the 400 to Buckhead, the 401 highway divides and splits during afternoon rush-hour traffic which slows and builds up so that vehicles and cars back-up as they head home and out of Downtown Atlanta, Georgia. The inner median is coned off during some construction work which slows the traffic even more. Crossing the 5-lane road comes a train of Atlanta's own mass-transit system, the MARTA network and it approaches the overpass with care. We see the infrastructure of a modern metropolis at the busiest time of day when the exodus to get home puts the roads and feeder lanes under the most pressure. Fortunately, the weather is fine with good visibility making drivers' journeys a little shorter and more tolerable but it shows too America's habit and dependency on car culture.

  • A coal delivery man deposits chunks of brown coal into the cellar via a conveyor belt for an elderly lady who stands outside in the bitter cold wearing only a housecoat this grim day. Her slippers can be seen standing among fallen briquettes that have dropped on to the wet cobbled street as the man oversees the delivery from a truck that has backed on to the pavement near a junction. A passing Trabant car rattles up the hill past a mother who pauses to ensure a safe crossing for her baby. Aue is a mining town in the Ore Mountains known for its copper, titanium, and kaolinite. • We look through the windscreen of a Royal Air Force C-130-J Hercules to see a pilots-eye view of his fixed head-up-display (HUD), while in flight over Hampshire during the Farnborough Air Show. We see the aircraft flying data in green set against the magenta colour (color) of the clouds and sky beyond. The pilot will see the statistics that are important aspects of his aeroplane's altitude, compass heading, localiser, air speed, pitch, roll and yaw. Head-up displays are increasingly important to military and commercial aircraft (airplanes) when information can be displayed without obstructing the user's front view front. The second type of HUD is mounted within a protective helmet visor. The C-130 Hercules primarily performs the tactical portion of airlift operations. The aircraft is capable of operating from rough, dirt strips and is the prime transport for air dropping troops and equipment into hostile areas. The C-130-J is the newer generation digital version with fully integrated digital avionics; color multifunctional liquid crystal displays including the HUD; state-of-the-art navigation systems with dual inertial navigation system and global positioning system; fully integrated defensive systems; low-power color radar; digital moving map display; new turboprop engines with six-bladed, all-composite propellers; digital auto pilot; improved fuel, environmental and ice-protection systems; and an enhanced cargo-handling system..

  • A local delivery van full of gas cylinders struggles to round an uphill corner in central Lisbon, Portugal. The narrow streets, not designed for heavy traffic, still do not accommodate smaller vehicles. A tram waits for the obstructing truck to clear the tracks and rails and onlookers stop to see how the driver manages to get round without spilling its dangerous cargo.

  • Junior Technician Brian Robb, an engineer with the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, shines his torch inside the flaps of a Hawk jet aircraft checking for obstructions, RAF Scampton, Lincolnshire. Wearing ear defenders clasped to his head, J/Tech Robb peers into the wing assembly during a pre-flight inspection before the pilot emerges from for another winter training flight. Robb is a member of the team's support ground crew who outnumber the pilots 8:1 and without them, the Red Arrows couldn't fly. Eleven trades are imported from some sixty that the RAF employs and teaches. Crouching by an RAF roundel emblem, he wears an army style green camouflage coat as protection over the biting Lincolnshire wind, and a fluorescent tabard required for any personnel working on the 'line', where the aircraft taxi to and park. .

  • The notification of a tree removal notice and injunction against obstruction is attached to the trunk of an oak tree in Sydenham Hill Woods, the scene of a protest against the proposed felling of two 100+ year-old oak trees, threatened by Southwark Council because of their proximity to 'Pissarro's' footbridge whose renovation has been deemed necessary by the local authority, on 24th November 2020, in London, England. The Nunhead to Crystal Palace (High Level) railway once passed through the Wood and Impressionist artist Camille Pissarro (1830–1903) famously painted a railway landscape from the bridge in the 1870s. Sydenham Hill Wood forms part of the largest remaining tract of the old Great North Wood, a vast area of worked coppices and wooded commons that once stretched across south London. The habitat is home to more than 200 species of trees and plants as well as rare fungi, insects, birds and woodland mammals.
