  • Striding across the picture in different directions, two office workers: A lady in a red coat whose head and identity is lost in shadow, and a man wearing a dark suit whose stride is purposeful and confident. A third person, another man, leans against a wall looking thoughtfully into the distance. There is more shadow than highlight in this scene taken at Broadgate, a private estate of financial institutions and global businesses in the heart of the City of London. There are no spring leaves on the trees whose shadows are falling on an opposite wall. The headless lady looks sinister minus her face and there is tension in this image of linear and diagonal space. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. The City of London is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City as it is known, is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. London Bridge's history stretches back to the first crossing over Roman Londinium, close to this site and subsequent wooden and stone bridges have helped modern London become a financial success.

  • In the heat and dust of the arid Sonoran desert are the remains of a Boeing 747 cockpit at the storage facility at Mojave, California. The wiring of the now-extinct flight engineer's console is a jumble of old technology. Either by age or cooling economy airliners are either cannibalised for still-working parts or recycled for scrap, their aluminium fuselages worth more than their sum total. Elsewhere, assorted aircraft wrecks sit abandoned in the scrub minus their bellies, legs or wings like dying birds. After a lifetime of safe commercial flight, wings are clipped and cockpits sliced apart by huge guillotines, cutting through their once-magnificent engineering. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903..

  • Minus tourists, the tall Ramessid columns in the peristyle court at the ancient Egyptian site of Medinet Habu (1194-1163BC), the Mortuary Temple of Ramesses III in Luxor, Nile Valley, Egypt. Medinet Habu is an important New Kingdom period structure in the West Bank of Luxor in Egypt. Aside from its size and architectural and artistic importance, the temple is probably best known as the source of inscribed reliefs depicting the advent and defeat of the Sea Peoples during the reign of Ramesses III.

  • A detail of a second world war Canadian veteran's chest, festooned with gleaming military campaign medals that symbolise an era of conflict, warfare and especially of survival. Seen as a close-up of polished silver, gold and zinc-alloy, we see only the upper body minus the face of this old soldier whose campaigns include the D-Day landings at Normandy in 1944 because at the bottom of his rack of fine insignia is a badge denoting the Normandy Veterans Association. Elsewhere, a medal is worn for service in Palestine. The unseen gentleman wears a Canadian pin at the top and the contribution of his fellow-countrymen as members of the British Commonwealth is recognised in battlefield cemeteries around the world. But on this day, the 11th November, old soldiers like him march past London's Cenotaph to remember friends who did not return from war.
