  • Near piles of chopped wood logs, a local hotel owner makes adjustments to solar panels that powers his guesthouse business in a remote Himalayan village, and for the sake of passing trekkers wanting hot showers after the climb up to this altitude, on 12th December, Ghorepani, Nepal. Ghorepani is at a height of 2874m (9429 ft) and is located within the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACA), requiring a national park permit to visit and contains a number of "guest houses" that provide lodging and meals to mountain trekkers, many of whom spend the night before a pre-dawn trek to the top of nearby Poon Hill (3210m/10531 ft) to watch the sunrise.

  • Using a tabloid newspaper, a father seeks shelter from sunshine while sitting in a council deck chair. On the front page of the paper is a headline saying "Butchered' showing a picture of an unfortunate young 3 year-old boy murdered by a maniac axeman. Close-by is the man's own son who is digging a hole furiously in the sand. He looks uncannily like a slightly older version of the murdered boy. This coincidence is heightened because of the body-language of the digging lad, seemingly about to chop an unseen object with his red spade. Both man and boy are on holiday at the northern English seaside resort of Scarborough, North Yorkshire and they are otherwise having a great time on South Beach, near the Grand Hotel building, high up on the cliff.

  • A tray of sardines fry on an outdoor grill in the Bairro Alto district - or Upper City - the oldest of Lisbon's residential quarters. We see in detail 16 fish (sardinhas assadas in Portuguese) all lying in the sunlight on their sides in neat, parralel rows with their clouded eyes staring up towards the viewer. They still have their silvery, scaley skin and Portuguese sardines are traditionally be served with finely-chopped potatoes, considered to be the sweetest and fattest sardines in the world. In Portugal, more than 60 percent of the national sardine catch is consumed fresh: 12 pounds a person, on average, compared to only 2 pounds of the fish canned. The sardine season - when the fish are plump and juicy - lasts from the end of May to the end of October, although the fat fish can keep coming until December. Lisbon's Bairro Alto quarter is located above Baixa and developed in the 16th Century. Suffering very little damage in the earthquake of 1755, it remains the area of most character and renowned for its residential and working quarter for craftsmen and shopkeepers. At night, life takes on a diferent personality when bars and up until the 60s, prostitution gave the district a bad reputation in the past but nowadays tourists and the chic frequent its streets and traditional 'Fado' (classical Portuguese opera) bars.  ..

The unconscious child is a few months old and the parent stands expertly holding both hot liquid and infant as if juggling pleasure and parenthood simultaneously. The sleeping child is limp in the father's arm and is dressed in the same scarlet red as the vibrant colour on the wall behind. We only see the man's upper-legs and torso but the baby is tiny against his body making the scale of both young and old. otherwise, the generic room is bare of decoration or possessions - only a drying cloth and chopping board is seen on the draining board, near plain white tiles.

Proud of his produce of fresh joints and carcasses of fresh meat, his business shows a successful and protitable financial concern in this Essex seaside town, largely inhabited by the older generation. We see in the background, hanging pork on hooks and beef joints in the display cabinet with a model of a butcher with his chopping block. A butcher is an ancient trade, whose duties may date back to the domestication of livestock, butchers formed guilds in England as far back as 1272. Today, many jurisdictions offer trade certifications for butchers. Some areas expect a three-year apprenticeship followed by the option of becoming a master butcher.
