  • Hidden in a wooden hut, a group of bird-spotting ornithologists peer through binoculars at the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) rreserve at Rainham Marshes, Essex England. Watching dozens of wintering birds, the group are intensely looking through their optical equipment in anticipation of seeing rare breeds at this Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), a wetland alongside the River Thames, 20 miles from Central London. A narrow slit is open to keep them hidden from sight so leaning on elbows and with a guide sheet in front to identify particular species, they concentrate on their hobby. The RSPB has 200 nature reserves covering almost 130,000 hectares, home to 80% of Britain's rarest or most threatened bird species. Its role is to speak out for birds and wildlife, tackling the problems that threaten the environment.

  • From a hospital light box, we see a detail of a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan. Sections of a patient's skull and brain illustrate to doctors, potential abnormalities. Dyes used in X-ray and CT scans in the same way because both areas use X-rays (ionizing radiation). Agents work by blocking the X-ray photons from passing through the area where they locate and reach the X-ray film. This results in differing levels of density on the X-ray/CT film but the dyes have no direct physiologic impact on the tissue in the body. MRI contrast works by altering the local magnetic field in the tissue being examined. Normal and abnormal tissue will respond differently to this slight alteration, yielding differing signals. Varied signals are transferred to the images, visualizing many different types of tissue abnormalities and diseases.

  • 50-70,000 pieces of British Airways baggage a day travel through these 11 miles of conveyor belts which were installed in a 5-storey underground hall beneath the 400m (a quarter of a mile) length of Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport. T5 alone has the capacity to serve around 30 million passengers a year and was completed in 2008 at a cost of £4.3bn. The system was designed by an integrated team from the airport operator BAA, BA and Vanderlande Industries of the Netherlands, and handles both intra-terminal and inter-terminal luggage. There are four colour codes: Yellow for out-of-gauge (oversized, like golf clubs); dark blue for not x-rayed; light blue for transfer and red, meaning the item has been subjected to 12 seconds of x-ray scanning.   • This is an unretouched scan made in August 2016 from a negative created in March 2000 on Merrit Island, Florida, USA. The picture shows a NASA space capsule once belonging to NASA space engineer Charles Bell whose collection of old space industry were auctioned after his death earlier that year. The capsule is seen here with other items to be sold, a day before the public auction. The copyright of this photograph belongs to Richard Baker (bakerpictures.com) who recorded the picture in person, on or around March, 3rd 2000. The policemen in uniform patrol the area with a presence to deter petty crime in a new and prosperous China. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949 and until the 1980s, almost all media outlets in Mainland China were state-run. Independent media outlets only began to emerge at the onset of economic reforms, although state-run media outlets such as Xinhua, CCTV, and People's Daily continue to hold significant market share.

  • A British Airways baggage handler scans the bar code of his airline passenger's item of luggage before loading it into the aircraft hold container bins. 50-70,000 pieces of BA baggage a day travel through 11 miles of conveyor belts which were installed in a 5-storey underground hall beneath the 400m (a quarter of a mile) length of Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport. T5 alone has the capacity to serve around 30 million passengers a year and was completed in 2008 at a cost of £4.3bn. The system was designed by an integrated team from the airport operator BAA, BA and Vanderlande Industries of the Netherlands, and handles both intra-terminal and inter-terminal luggage.
