  • "Eye Contact." A mother peers over the bath to keep watch over her five month-old baby daughter who is lying on a matt, holding a towel to her face. The infant has had her own time in the water and the mum has taken the opportunity to bathe too. They both look into each other's eyes in a picture of love, trust and joy. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

Brockwell Lido in Herne Hill SE24 was originally built in 1937 at a time of coastal and city pool-building but went into decline when bathers preferred to holiday in warmer Spain. Its revival happened when local entrepreneurs re-opened the business and it now enjoys a reputation for some of the best urban swims in the UK.

  • During an August heatwave, the population of Brixton and many others from all over London, bask in the glorious weather at the Brockwell (Brixton) Lido in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, South London. The Lido is a magnet for families, select groups, the young and old and represents an amalgam of humanity who enjoy the benefits of outdoor bathing and the friendship of meeting old friends and new acquaitances. We see two men of Afro-carribean origin who have a corner of the Lido to themselves. One wears a towel wrapped around his lower-body and sits, arms folded with a look of territorial superiority while the other applies sun lotion to his leg. There is little space left on the full pavement which retains its solar heat long after the sun has left the quadrangle of the lido's oblong design but their colourful towels and possessions are spread out on the paving stones along with childrens' toys including an Action Man toy soldier who is also tanning himself. It is a scene of fun for all ages and backgrounds. Brockwell Lido is a large, open air swimming pool in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, London. It opened in July 1937, closed in 1990 and after a local campaign was re-opened in 1994. Brockwell Lido was designed by HA Rowbotham and TL Smithson of the London County Council's Parks Department to replace Brockwell Park bathing pond. It is now a Grade II listed building

  • An elderly gentleman has just emerged from a swim in the cold waters off Paignton, the seaside town in Devon, south-west England. Still to towel himself down, he looks chilled to the bone but stands talking to friends out of view. The man wears dark trunks (costume) and has a large belly but otherwise looks fit and healthy, a true picture of health for a man of his age, after swimming in these seas for many years and enjoying the endorphins that are stimulated after wild, outdoor swims.

  • A newborn baby boy is carried away from his mother immediately after she has given birth to the child in the delivery ward at Kings College Hospital, Camberwell, London. Handling the crying and twisting infant with only one hand, the lady health professional takes it to a warm towel and then to some weighing scales where the baby is checked and cleaned then returned to the mum who is still on the birthing bed. From a personal documentary project entitled "Next of Kin" about the photographer's two children's early years spent in parallel universes.

  • Whilst on a cruise aboard the Fun Ship Ecstasy during a voyage from Miami around the Gulf of Mexico, passengers enjoy a sexual game on deck beneath a strong tropical sun. Male contestants have lined up to be inspected by a blindfolded lady wearing a swim suit and painted nails who is required to identify her own husband by feeling his lower body and torso. Howls of laughter emit from the other men as the lady realises that this is indeed her own spouse who stands on a chair, his bulging crotch at chest height. She smiles to herself, still blind beneath a towel and the moment is funny enough for all to enjoy a happy hour of organised entertainment on deck. The Panamanian-registered MS Ecstasy is a 70,367 ton cruise ship carrying 2,052 passengers and 920 crew belonging to Vegas-style Carnival Cruise lines.

  • A makeshift warning sign made from plywood is roughly painted with letters declaring 'oil on beach.' It hangs on some silver railings on an unknown beach in England. The sand is strewn with sharp stones and litter and coloured (colored) a dirty brown stain high up on the shore line and more worrying, a little more distant, a father cuddles his baby child on a towel surrounded by possessions such as a cool box and the seaside toys of a happy family holiday (vacation). We look down on to this scene in disbelief that a parent lies down on such polluted terrain when health and safety considerations might have closed the entire esplanade.

  • After their flight from Italy where they have been performing a series of summer concerts, some young musicians stop to await instructions from their accompanying teacher at Oakham School, England. Amid the hectic concourse of Heathrow airport's Terminal 5, a cellist has removed her precious string instrument to inspect it for damage after its shipment in the hold of a British Airways flight. As their friends look on, a fellow-player helps re-wrap the cello in a pink towel before the whole group re-assemble again to begin their evening journey home. • With his personal belongings and beach shingle surrounding him, a man sits on his seaside towel in soft sunlight in Dover eating a snack which is dribbling out of his mouth. The skin from many previous hours of exposure to solar radiation has left him raw and sunburned and therefore dried and dying skin is peeling in shreds on his back and shoulder. He looks like an eccentric local character who seems oblivious to the health risks that his continued sunbathing is inflicting on his bizarrely scorched body.

  • Brit spectators enjoy a hot summer on their union jack towels in the Olympic Park during the London 2012 Olympics, sitting on green grass located on a hilltop across from the iconic Velodrome venue. London's Olympic Park, at just under a square mile, is the largest new park in the city for more than 100 years. The planting of 4,000 trees, 300,000 wetland plants and more than 150,000 perennial plants plus nectar-rich wildflower make for a colourful setting for the Games. This land was transformed to become a 2.5 Sq Km sporting complex, once industrial businesses and now the venue of eight venues including the main arena, Aquatics Centre and Velodrome plus the athletes' Olympic Village. After the Olympics, the park is to be known as Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

  • Despite a gloriously bright summer afternoon, we see a depressing corner of Southend-on-Sea's Adventure Island. A young couple sits on some white towels in front of a wall that is adorned with graffiti and has its paint rubbed away. It is a scene of squalor and desolation in a town that makes revenue from the day-tripper holiday market. Since Victorian times, many Londoners have traditionally come to this south-east coast on the Thames Estuary, close to the capital. Towns like this have seen a marked decline since the advent of the package tourism in favour of exotic beaches in Spain.

  • An elderly lady uses a 1970s model of Kodak Instamatic film camera whilst visiting an English country garden. With her eye pressed to the viewfinder, this amateur photographer is a pensioner on a day trip to the country and she takes a snapshot to record the beautiful view of flower beds and neatly-trimmed lawns. The Instamatic was a series of inexpensive, easy-to-load 126 and 110 cameras made by Kodak from 1963 and it was immensely successful, introducing a generation to low-cost photography and helping the growth of the contemporary photographic family album. More than 50 million Instamatic cameras were produced between 1963 and 1970. Kodak even gave away a considerable number in a joint promotion with Scott paper towels in the early 1970s in order to generate a large number of new photographers and stimulate lasting demand for its film business.

The Lido is a magnet for families, select groups, the young and old and represents an amalgam of humanity who enjoy the benefits of outdoor bathing and the friendship of meeting old friends and new acquaitances. We see a mass of people in late afternoon light with deep tans from the extended hot summer. There is little space left on the full pavement which retains its solar heat long after the sun has left the quadrangle of the lido's oblong design. • Four children leap out into the wide blue yonder on a beach in Whitley Bay, England. Jumping at a height from a sea defence wall, the kids all hold their towels above their heads and as they leave the ground, look down to their landing spot - the soft sand below. It is a scene of chilhood recklnessness, when children and young people take risks that adults don't. But youngsters don't have a sense of danger but instead, exhilarating desire for adventure. The beach in the distance is largely deserted so the kids have lots of space to fulfill their games.

The wife appears to be asleep and has taken the prrecution against splinters from the pier's planks by spreading a tiny towell to rest her feet upon. She has dyed hair and large sun glasses and her bony legs are tanned and veined from much exposure to the sun. The husband is also fully-clothed with a loud checked jacket, black shoes and socks and he sits crossed-legged with a peaked cap and dark glasses with his hands across his belly. They are in a peaceful spot on this pier, a Victorian seaside structure built in 1899 for those taking the air to walk out onto the sea without getting their feet wet.
