  • As the Statten Island ferry nears the business district and skyscrapers of Manhattan Island, a New York City Police Department (NYPD) police officer stands guard at the very front (the bow) of the boat. It is approximately ten days after the 9/11 attacks and with pistol safely holstered and arms folded, he can see the settling dust from Ground Zero beyond the safety chain, where the Twin Towers once stood. It is a bright day and behind the policeman, commuters are already returning to work because normality is a priority for those affected by disruption and fear.

  • City workers carry office possessions including computer hard drives and files that were damaged by the IRA bomb that devastated the City of London's Bishopsgate area in 1993. Allowed to return to their desks to recover their data and working paperwork, they walk through the ancient streets en route to new emergency office elsewhere in the capital. The Irish Republican Army (IRA) exploded a truck bomb on Bishopsgate. Buildings up to 500 metres away were damaged with one and a half million square feet (140,000 m) of office space being affected and over 500 tonnes of glass broken. Repair costs reached approx £350 million. It was said that Roman remains could be viewed at the bottom of the pit the bomb created. One person was killed when the one ton fertiliser bomb detonated directly outside the medieval St Ethelburga's church.

  • Corporal Mal Faulder pushes a Martin-Baker ejection seat through an RAF Hangar. He is an Armourer (an engineer handling seats and weaponry on military jets) but here in the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's Royal Air Force aerobatic team, his duties are wider. With other members of the team's support staff (the Blues who outnumber the pilots the Reds by 8 to 1) he also helps clean the Hawk aircraft before air shows across the country. He pulls the seat into a blast-protected bunker for safe storage where explosive charges inside this equipment are temporarily removed. The seat is returned to service when the aircraft is through its regular maintenance schedule. British company Martin-Baker manufacturers ejection seats and membership of the its Tie Club is solely for air crew who have ejected from an aircraft in an emergency which saved their life.

  • Delivery man carrying a trolley walks through a shaft of early spring light in a side street in the capital's financial district. This is Lombard Street, originally a piece of land granted by King Edward I to goldsmiths from the part of northern Italy known as Lombardy (larger than the modern region of Lombardy). It is a narrow and usually dark sidestreet near the Bank of England in the heart of what is called the Square Mile - the inner-part and oldest quarter of London occupied first by the Romans 2,000 years ago. Nowadays the City of London is home to banks and financial institutions but also with a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000.

  • We are looking upwards into the faces of two surgeons wearing medical masks and surgical gowns as they carry out a wisdom tooth extraction procedure at the famous St. Bartholomews (Barts) Hospital in London, England. With eyes focussed on their work, the two health professionals are intently looking into the mouth of their patient who is covered in clean green sheets but remains unseen to the viewer. Strong operating theatre lights shine down on to the patient and we see the men's gloved hands reaching carefully, avoiding infection or bacterial problems like MRSA. Barts is Britain's oldest hospital - founded in 1123 - and boasts a progressive policy of encouraging day-surgery for out-patients allowing patients to return home soon after their minor operations.

  • A helium-filled Welcome Home balloon floats in the air and a home-made banner stretches across Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5 arrivals hall. Three families have gathered to meet their respective sons who have been travelling around the world during their university gap year sabbatical trip of a lifetime. With balloon and banner amid the hectic concourse where other relatives greet their loved-ones after months away from home on their adventures. This is a tradition practised across the world's airports where families are separated by the need to travel or work in other countries and the emotion of meeting again after long absences is always hard. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).

  • Half-way across the thin taut wire of a tightrope, an tightwire walker acrobat riding a monocycle pauses and wobbles to compensate his balance before continuing his journey across to safety at the other end of two supporting poles The act forms part of the Canadian circus troupe Cirque de Soleil during a show in Battersea, London. Blue and red spotlights illuminate this daredevil and we see his tights, his wide-sleeved theatrical shirt and the concentration and grim determination on his face - the look of a professional trickster at work. He may be showing a seemingly dangerous and unpredictable stunt though in truth, he will have rehearsed this simple balancing act for many years but must still keep up the illusion of danger for the sake of a gasping, gullible audience.

  • Two businessmen - one younger than the other, who may be his superior - pace through the Broadgate Estate during a break in the working day in the City of London, the capital's financial centre - otherwise called the Square Mile. Seen as they walk fast under a covered alleyway, the warm sun strikes their faces while they are deep in conversation - perhaps discussing a strategy while fetching a local coffee. Deep shadow allows us to focus in on their dark suits, their pink skin and the similarly orange colour of the strong vertical columns that form this urban architecture completed in the Bishopsgate development of the mid-1980s. Broadgate is a large, 32 acres (129,499 m2) office and retail estate in the City of London, owned by British Land and managed by Broadgate Estates.
