• An EU flag and the Prussian Eagle sit side-by-side, on 16th May 2000, in Frankfurt, Germany. The EU flag hangs limply alongside the old German world Prussian eagle near the balcony of Frankfurt's Rathaus or Town hall in historic Romerberg Square. The yellow stars formed into a circle of the European Union member states lie on a background of blue but the bronze green eagle harks back to a previous era of German politics and culture. The state of Prussia developed from the State of the Teutonic Order. The original flag of the Teutonic Knights had been a black cross on a white flag. Emperor Frederick II in 1229 granted them the right to use the black Eagle of the Holy Roman Empire.[citation needed] This "Prussian Eagle" remained the coats of arms of the successive Prussian states until 1947. • A portrait of a mother in her 41st year has been gathering heather in handfuls and holds up her young child who grins towards his father who is taking the picture at a park near the Essex seaside town of Southend. It is the summer of 1960 and the mum's dress is styled from the previous decade: blue with white spots and pearl necklace. She too is smiling as she grasps the flowers and her child on a warm day. Oddly, the boy looks as though he is wearing a girl's dress which may have been a hand-me-down from an older sibling or just the trend then.

She has hung her colourful (colorful) clothes washing out to dry on a line and on the structure's bowl-like shape that points towards space and signals from the outside world. It was designed to receive television signals from Nepal's main TV station is Nepal Television (NTV) whose programmes are mostly serials from Pakistan and Hindi films. Nepalis however, search the wider-world for their news digest and western culture, especially during governmental crackdown and censorship during the democracy protest disturbances of 2006. King Gyanendra imposed severe media restrictions after assuming direct control of the country the previous year. The scene is of new technology in the backdrop of a poor, third world country who freedoms of expression and experience of western democracy has been tested in recent years.

The gamekeeper's house lies alongside the cobbled Princes Lane (Prinsendreef) in Everberg and was built around 1770. The house was more familiar as the New Hostel (Nieuwe herbergh). This house was rented. Art historians described it as an 18th-century house in provincial regency style. In the end of the 19th century the house became the gamekeeper's house of de Merode Castle. The latter is the owner of the house as well. The gamekeeper's house is known in Everberg as the previous house of 'Jef van Vinus' or Jozef Meersman, who was the actual gamekeeper.
Across the country, and even at important tourist landmarks, buildings sit vacant and often collapsing. Sometimes it is because a previous generation have passed away to leave properties in the hands of arguing families. Beautiful buildings are therefore left to collapse in town centre. In the 11th century, Luso was a sleepy village linked to a monastery in the hills near Coimbra but it became a lively spa resort in the 1700s as its hot water springs became a focus for tourism. • A derelict building lies vacant after many years but is now for sale by a local estate agent, on 17th July, at Aveira, Portugal. Across the country, and even at important tourist landmarks, both fine and modest buildings sit vacant and often collapsing. Sometimes it is because a previous generation have passed away to leave properties in the hands of arguing families. Beautiful buildings are therefore left to collapse in town centre. • Close-up of Team GB Olympic cycling champion Bradley Wiggins on a large TV screen during the London 2012 Olympics. Wiggins has become a hero for Britons with 'Wiggo's'" victory in the time trial the previous day. This land was transformed to become a 2.5 Sq Km sporting complex, once industrial businesses and now the venue of eight venues including the main arena, Aquatics Centre and Velodrome plus the athletes' Olympic Village. After the Olympics, the park is to be known as Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

 • With his personal belongings and beach shingle surrounding him, a man sits on his seaside towel in soft sunlight in Dover eating a snack which is dribbling out of his mouth. The skin from many previous hours of exposure to solar radiation has left him raw and sunburned and therefore dried and dying skin is peeling in shreds on his back and shoulder. He looks like an eccentric local character who seems oblivious to the health risks that his continued sunbathing is inflicting on his bizarrely scorched body.

 • Prime Minster Margaret Thatcher is seen giving a party speech at the 1991 Conservative Party Conference in Blackpool, Lancashire, a full year after being removed by her own colleagues the previous November. Her softer and perhaps pensive expression contrasts with her reputation of the Iron Lady with a gaze that made her opponents uncomfortable. She seems distant here, perhaps recalling her great days in office when she was a powerful figure in world politics. She is wearing the same favourite two-tone blue suit with wide shoulders and a pearl ear-rings as she wore the year before when still in office. The ambient stage lights emphasize the blonde highlights in her hair.

 • Portrait of the renowned British mountaineer, adventurer, lecturer and writer Sir Chris Bonnington photographed at his home called Badger Hill, in Wigton, Cumbria, England. Bonnington is seen wearing a Gortex jacket against a backdrop holding an ice-axe used on a previous Himalayan mountain expedition. Bonnigton is best known for his 1975 expedition to conquer Mount Everest though he was formerly an army officer in the Royal Tank Regiment before making mountaineering and the writing of these sometimes tragic outcomes a career.

 • Soon after setting sail from Miami, en-route to Cancun in Mexico, passengers of Carnival Cruise's Fun Ship Ecstasy liner are told to report on the top sun deck for the obligatory safety drill. Told to fetch their life vests from their respective cabins and suites, they have gathered at various muster points around the vessel to hear the crews' instructions about abandoning ship or the precuations needed to enter the water. We look down from a higher deck to see several dozen tourists on red vests, milling around awaiting the signal to return to their previous activities and entertainment. Operators like US-owned Carnival take these drills very seriously. Carnival was a pioneer in the concept of cheaper and shorter cruises. Its ships are known for their Las Vegas decor and entertainment. The cruise line calls its ships The Fun Ships and the MS Ecstasy is a Fantasy class cruise ship featuring two pools, whirlpools, a variety of dining options, nightclubs, a casino, and duty-free shopping. After Hurricane Katrina, she spent six months in New Orleans serving as quarters for refugees and relief workers. She suffered heavy damage in 1998 after the laundry room in the ship's stern caught fire damaging much of her stern and aft section.

 • Behind railings that honoured American aviator Wilbur Wright at the annual Le Mans air show, France, seven spectators gaze upwards to a clear sky where a lone but unseen aircraft performs in front of the French crowd. Wright made 110 flights at Le Mans and nearby Auvours in 1908 and his legacy for French and global aerospace lives on at events like this where a replica of his Wright Flyer was also exhibited. It is a bright summer's day and the blue sky has vapour trails left by a previous display pilot's jet engine. A prominent British Union Jack flutters on a pole and the words 'invites' (for invited guests only) are printed on to sheets of paper. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903. .

 • The flight-deck crew of a Sri Lankan Airlines A340-300 series Airbus - registration number 4R-ADE - perform a series of pre-flight checks before a scheduled departure, while on the apron at Malé international airport in the Republic of the Maldives. Featuring electronic instruments it is known as a 'glass cockpit' and using a printed checklist manual, they methodically work through dozens of complex systems that require accurate input before the aircraft is ready for take off. Flight navigation computers, fuel and engine settings and radio frequencies all need programming by the two pilots, the captain on the left and the First Officer on the right. These modern airliners have only two pilots in a modern flight-deck as technology superceeded the need for a third member, the flight-engineers of a previous era of aviation.

 • A young boy cycles past the gamekeeper's house at the entrance of the privately-owned de Merode Castle, on 25th March, in Everberg, Belgium.
In the 21st century though, the hat is largely an item of clothing to wear only for extreme cold or heat.

 • A labourer reads a copy of Britain's tabloid Sun Newspaper. The worker holds a coffee and wears a working mans' cap with a pencil in his right ear as he sits in sunshine during a lunch break. In the context of the News International media scandals of 2011, the (daily) Sun is a sister paper to the now defunct (Sunday) News of The World, closed down by proprietor Rupert Murdoch in the light of public outrage over phone hacking. The Sun's own headline refers to the previous day when Murdoch sat before a Parliamentary Select Committee to answer questions about the nature of phone hacking into private voicemails of victims and their grieving families. Murdoch's overall message was the committee grilling was his most humble day.
