  • Pigeon pest controller, Sue Van Vynck releases Harriet, her Harris Hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus) to scare away the local pigeon population. The ancient sport of Falconry has become today's humane pest control of choice, particularly as costs falls. Once a pigeon population has been scared away, it requires only a token hawk presence to keep it away. Van Vynck Bird Control is a specialist company providing over 25 years, a range of environmental services dealing with nuisance bird management. They are pioneers of specialist techniques such as the use of predatory species (such as falconry) to displace and interrupt behavioural patterns as well as offering a complete range of physical deterrents. Here at Broadgate the nuisance was pigeons and Harriet leaves Sue's gloved hand to patrol the architecture of this 32 acres (129,499 m2) office and retail space.

  • On its regular morning walk and wearing a matching red coat as its owner, a small dog exercises in Holmead Road in the experimental community village of Poundbury, Dorset, England. As the mutt looks at the camera, the man waits for him to stop sniffing around before moving on. The pair stand on crunchy gravel, a deterrent for would-be thieves who might be tempted to this small town where middle-class residents live. Poundbury is the visionary model village that Charles, Prince of Wales sought to develop in 1993 as a successful and pioneering town near Dorchester, built on land owned by his own Duchy of Cornwall, challenging otherwise poor post-war trends in town planning and to some extent following the New Urbanism concept from the US except that the design influences are European..

Otherwise known as doormen or door supervisers, these usually hardened men offer a deterrent for anyone causing trouble inside ot out of licensed bars and clubs such as this. Lit from overhead spotlights, he looks menacing and capable of street violence - enough to urge troublemakers to move on quick. reflected in the glass is Ed's Diner a well-known eaterie in this street. Soho is known as a rather seedy but vibrant area of London's West End and late-night social disorder fuelled by excessive alcohol is pretty much normal.

  • Vinnie Browse switches off his overhead reading light in his Junior Rating bunk aboard HMS Vigilant, a 16,000 ton, 150m long Vanguard class nuclear submarine while moored at HM Naval Base Clyde, Faslane, Scotland. Vigilant has a crew of 140 men and when at sea, only incoming communication, family-grams, are allowed so many months away on operational duty can be tough on home life. On-board entertainment is therefore important for morale. The Vanguard Class SSBN (Ship Submersible Ballistic Nuclear) provides the United Kingdom's strategic nuclear deterrent and carries Trident II ballistic missiles, powered by a pressurised water reactor (PWR) fuelled by a ton of fissionable uranium elements producing huge amounts of energy. • A Virgin Atlantic Airbus A340 crosses the perimeter fence at Heathrow Airport on its way to an international destination. Seen from below, the passing Jumbo takes-off and climbs under full take-off power over the surrounding airfield security fence. Its razor-wire is an effective deterrent against protesters or terrorists and symbolises the lengths that airport authorities (in this case BAA) need go to to ensure their property is safe. The aircraft is seen almost entangled in the secure wire as if passing through the mesh. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).

  • Standing against strong Autumnal afternoon light, two police officers from an unknown constabulary, guard one entrance to the venue where the Conservative (Tory) Party Conference is being held, at the Bournemouth International Centre that overlooks the sea in Dorset, England. In 1990, the terrorist threat came from Irish Republicans (IRA) rather than Islamist extemists and credible threats proved to be correct, that these idealists wanted to assassinate Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Police cordons were therefore an efficient method of controlling and restricting access to those without the proper delegates' or media accreditation. The most striking figure is the male officer in the foreground whose profile is prominent because of his traditional police helmet.
