  • A view of St Paul's Cathedral, seen through the entrance of a shopping mall opposite in the City of London. St Paul's Cathedral, London, is a Church of England cathedral and seat of the Bishop of London. Its dedication to Paul the Apostle dates back to the original church on this site, founded in AD 604. St Paul's sits at the top of Ludgate Hill, the highest point in the City of London, and is the mother church of the Diocese of London. The present church dating from the late 17th century was built to an English Baroque design of Sir Christopher Wren, as part of a major rebuilding program that took place in the city after the Great Fire of London, and was completed within his lifetime.

  • A tourist family pose for photos near London's St Paul's Cathedral. Beneath the huge Portland stone walls of this Sir Christopher Wren-designed church, the relatives pose for an older member family member who stands some feet away for a wide photograph. Sir Christopher Wren FRS (1632 - 1723) is one of the most highly acclaimed English architects in history. He used to be accorded responsibility for rebuilding 51 churches in the City of London after the Great Fire in 1666, including his masterpiece, St. Paul's Cathedral, on Ludgate Hill, completed in 1710. The cathedral is built of Portland stone in a late Renaissance style that represents England's sober Baroque.

  • A 1999 landscape showing the construction of the new Millennium Bridge over the river Thames, opposite St. Paul's Cathedral in the City, on 16th February 1999, in London, England. The £18.2m Millennium Bridge (a Thames crossing linking the City of London at St. Paul's Cathedral with the Tate Modern Gallery at Bankside) was London's newest river crossing for 100-plus years and coincided with the Millennium, it was hurriedly finished and opened to the public on 10 June 2000 when an estimated 100,000 people crossed it to discover the structure oscillated so much that it was forced to close 2 days later. Over the next 18 months designers added dampeners to stop its wobble but it already symbolised what was embarrassing and failing in British pride. Now the British Standard code of bridge loading has been updated to cover the swaying phenomenon, referred to as Synchronous Lateral Excitation. While stretching with his long sponge into the corner of this window, one worker on the left is wiping soapy liquid onto the grimy glass before cleaning it off with a squeegee. His colleague on the right is communicating with the cradle operator in the building's roof, way above these men, in order to raise the cradle and allowing the men to achieve the correct operating height. Far below them is the capital's Square Mile, London's financial and oldest area. • The dome of St Paul's Cathedral is seen through a gap in mature ash tree branches, from the London borough of Lambeth to the City of London, approximately 5 miles distant. The large crossing dome is composed of three layers: the first triple dome ever to be constructed. • The stern of Admiral Lord Nelson's flagship HMS Victory at Portsmouth. We look up at the rear of Britain's most famous warship from the Napoleonic war era and see the windows of Nelson's cabins and rooms - the location where the battle of Trafalgar was planned and where Nelson died on that day in 1805. Victory took Nelson's body to England where, after lying in state at Greenwich, he was buried in St. Paul's Cathedral on 6 January 1806..HMS Victory is a 104-gun first-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, laid down in 1759 and launched in 1765. After Trafalgar, she served as a harbour ship, moved in 1922 to a dry dock at Portsmouth, England, and preserved as a museum ship. She is the flagship of the First Sea Lord and is the oldest naval ship still in commission
