  • A small boy shows a fascination for a huge tractor wheel at the Lambeth country fair in inner-city south London. Possibly never having seen a large machine such as this at close-quarters, the lad stares at the giant nuts that attach the wheel to the main frame. Perhaps he is captivated by its immensity and scale, so much larger than his toy vehicle at home in his toy box.

  • A Christian crucifix stands encased in a wooden box that has been attached to a panelled wall in Quebec, Canada. The image is white except for the Jesus icon itself and coloured lights which glow on this dark afternoon in the depths of Winter. The religious shrine consists of the human effigy standing a plinth next to faded dried flowers. On the left side are six wheel hubs also fixed to a wire fence that borders this person's property. Their decorative design suggests the Canadian owner likes driving sports or utility vehicles but who is also a worshipper of the Christian faith and believer in idols. Canada's 2001 Census showed, 72% of the Canadian population listed Roman Catholicism or Protestantism as their religion. The Roman Catholic Church in Canada is by far the country's largest single denomination.

  • The ever-turning London Eye is seen over the River Thames with the Palace of Westminster and Parliament beyond. The wheel is blurred after a minute's exposure and the blue sky behind renders evening as a romantic cityscape backdrop. We see Big Ben in the Tower of Westminster and Parliament just as they have become floodlit and the stand out set against the other buildings, very easily recognised as the iconic London landmarks known around the world. The Eye, or as it was known in 2000, the Millennium Wheel, was designed by architects David Blian, Julia Barfield, Malcolm Cook, Mark Sparrowhawk, Steven Chilton and Nic Bailey, and carries 32 sealed, air-conditioned passenger capsules which rotate at 0.26 metres (0.85 feet) per second (about 0.9 km/h or 0.5 mph) so that one revolution takes about 30 minutes.

  • Found in a garage where it had been stored virtually untouched for 50 years, this 1937 Bugatti Type 57s Atalante sports car is previewed for the first time before a Bonhams auction in Paris on February 7th 2009. Here, we see a detail of the steering wheel and dashboard while in a garage/studio before the auction and sale in Paris. In 2008 the Bugatti Type 57S with chassis number 57502 built in 1937 with the Atalante coachwork for Earl Howe was discovered in a private garage in Newcastle upon Tyne, having been stored untouched for 48 years and known about only by a select few people. It was auctioned in February 2009 at the Retromobile motor show in Paris, France, fetching EUR3.4 million (US$4.6 million), becoming one of the highest valued cars in automotive history, owing much to its extremely low mileage, original condition and ownership pedigree.

They are attending a classic car rally in Brighton during a Gay Pride festival, that this English seaside town regularly hosts during the hot south coast summers. The large 60s steering wheel is seen in the foreground and the vehicle's leather seat looks shiny clean against the bright light. There is a classic car magazine resting on one man's knee and they are clearly mad about this era of motor transportation.

'Freewheel' was a Hovis-sponsored event for riders and families to enjoy a day of traffic-free cycling through the capital's streets and this girl has ridden 18 miles on this late-summer Sunday - starting and finishing in this park. The shadow of a rear bicycle wheel can be seen to her right and she feigns death by spreading out on the grass, pretending to sleep before reviving herself with a drink and pedalling on home, yet another mile away.

  • The writer, essayist and philosopher Alain de Botton leans against the wheel of a traditional dhoni boat in the Indian Ocean. De Botton is in the Maldives researching his book 'The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work' about the world of Work, published in April 2009. Here he accompanies a fishing boat crew who use hand and line methods to land yellow fin tuna for export to the EU and in particular, Sainsbury's supermarket. Barefoot on the roof of the wheelhouse and with the top of his pen in mouth, he looks thoughfully into the distance to think of more great ideas for his best-selling book. Alain de Botton (born Zurich, 1969) now lives in London. His best-selling books refer both to his own experiences and ideas- and those of artists, philosophers and thinkers. It's a style of writing that has been termed a 'philosophy of everyday life.'
