  • Seen from the air at dawn, dozens of F-4 Phantom fighters from the Cold War-era are laid out in grids across the arid desert at Davis-Monthan Air Forbe Base near Tucson Arizona. These retired aircraft whose air frames are too old for flight are being stored then recycled, their aluminium worth more than their sum total at this repository for old military fighter and bomber aircraft. They sit in neat rows in low light, their shadowy wings are blue in colour but their fuselage are stripped of markings, being taped up against the dust. This is a scene of once-great flying machines relegated to sad scrap, long-after the Soviet Union's own demise when western armies fought a war of propaganda. .

Here, the fate of the world's retired civil airliners is decided by age or cooling economy. Cannibalised for still-working parts or recycled for scrap, their aluminium is worth more than their sum total. Elsewhere, assorted aircraft wrecks sit abandoned in the scrub minus their bellies, legs or wings like dying birds. After a lifetime of safe commercial flight, wings are clipped and cockpits sliced apart by huge guillotines, cutting through their engineering.   • The wrecked remains of a Curtiss C-46 Commando WW2-era transport aircraft awaiting salvage or recycling in the desert airfield of Davis Monthan in Tucson, Arizona. The Curtiss C-46 Commando is a transport aircraft originally derived from a commercial high-altitude airliner design. It was instead used as a military transport during World War II by the United States Army Air Forces as well as the U.S. Navy/Marine Corps under the designation R5C. Known to the men who flew them as "The Whale," the "Curtiss Calamity," the "plumber's nightmare" and the "flying coffin," At the time of its production, the C-46 was the largest twin-engine aircraft in the world, and the largest and heaviest twin-engine aircraft to see service in World War II.

  • The old church at Kilninian (built 1755, ten years after the Jacobite Rising) but the site of worship with medieval tombstones dating from the 14th century, Kilninian, Isle of Mull, Scotland. church is one of the oldest, and until very recently, still used for worship.   Possibly standing on the site of an earlier medieval church, it first appears in the records of 1561, where it is stated that the parsonage of 'Keilnoening' had formerly belonged to the Abbot of Iona, one-third of the revenues going to the Bishop of the Isles as was customary in the diocese. Iona Abbey would have appointed a minister for the church at a stipend lower than the tithes. It is uncertain whether the church was dedicated to St Ninian, the apostle of Galloway, or to a local saint of the Early Christian period'. This ruined chapel, which served the N portion of the parish of Torosay, is probably of early 13th century date. No medieval references to it have been identified, and its dedication is unknown. The records of the Synod of Argyll in the middle of the 17th century show some uncertainty as to the status of the charge; it is referred to both as a 'Chappell' and as a 'paroach'. The building may already have been derelict at this period, although the earliest evidence of its condition dates from 1787 when it was shown as 'an old kirk' on a map of Torosay parish. Salen (Scottish Gaelic: An t-Sàilean) is a settlement on the Isle of Mull, Scotland. It is on the east coast of the island, on the Sound of Mull, approximately halfway between Craignure and Tobermory.   • Taken from a tall apartment block, we see an aerial view overlooking the ex-Portuguese colony of Macau's Chinese Christian cemetery of San Miguel. The Cemiterio de São Miguel Arcanjo (Saint Miguel Catholic Cemetery) is located right in the middle of Macao island, on Estrada do Cemiterio and host the graves of the old Dutch and Portuguese colonials that helped shape Macau, now one of the world's most densely-populated city. We see a single Chinese lady walking along one of many criss-crossing diagonal pathways carrying a red bucket of water to tend these graves. She appears tiny compared to the multitude of plots, some which have crosses and others which have simple headstones. They are mostly neat and tidy but some have become overgrown with grass sprouting up. Macau's gambling revenue in 2006 weighed in at a massive £3.6bn - about £100m more than Las Vegas. The official languages are Portuguese and Chinese. The Macau Special Administrative Region is one of the two special administrative regions of the People's Republic of China (PRC), along with Hong Kong. Administered by Portugal until 1999, it was the oldest European colony in China, dating back to the 16th century. The administrative power over Macau was transferred to the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1999, 2 years after Hong Kong's own handover. .

Possibly standing on the site of an earlier medieval church, it first appears in the records of 1561, where it is stated that the parsonage of 'Keilnoening' had formerly belonged to the Abbot of Iona, one-third of the revenues going to the Bishop of the Isles as was customary in the diocese. Iona Abbey would have appointed a minister for the church at a stipend lower than the tithes. It is uncertain whether the church was dedicated to St Ninian, the apostle of Galloway, or to a local saint of the Early Christian period'.   It is also believed to have been once known as the Chapel of the Nine Maidens and in Gaelic  'Cill Naoi Nighean', although another possible name was The Church of the Holy Maidens - 'Cill Naoimh Nighean...(http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/mull/kilninianchurch/index.html)
