  • High in the mountains is a lone tree stands as testament to the deforestation problem in the Himalayas, wood used for tourist showers. Communities here partly-depend on the agriculture of rice-growing but also on the passing tourist trade. Western trekkers from all over the world walk through these tiny communities on their way up the series of climbing trails of the Annapurna Conservation Sanctuary circuit, a sometimes rigorous walk from the low hills of Pokhara to the higher altitudes of Annapurna, the (26,000 feet (8,000 metre) peak. To be greeted by so much choice is the most rewarding experience and the offer of hot showers is about the best reward for so much exertion.

Birds such as Coot, Mallard, Moorhen, Tern and Grebe are all surviving thanks to investment and a commitment to protect native species. Barton Broad is the largest Broad in the Ant Valley. It is a man-made landscape impacted by natural processes - the open water is a result of flooded peat diggings. The fen habitat around Barton Broad contributes to the largest fenland expanse in the UK and contains rare vegetation.

His homemade toy is the antithesis of what a wealthy lad might wish for in 21st century Britain when gadgets were all a kid wants and games outside have become rare and uncool. But this is still the early 1990s in times of recession when a make do and mend philosophy means families improvise with what they have and wealth is out of reach for many.

  • The rare Victoria Cross is worn on the chest of the celebrated Nepali war veteran Bhanu Bhagta Gurung (also written Bhanubhakta), an ex-soldier of the British Gurkha regiment who in the second world war, earned his medals from repeated bravery against Japanese positions in Burma. He sits here on the terrace of his home, above the misty valley of Gorkha, Central Nepal. He is one of the last survivors of the remarkably brave men  who helped defeat the enemy in the jungles of south-east Asia. Gurung is the name of his Nepalese tribe (like the Sherpas who also come from the high Himalayan Kingdom). His company commander described him as "a smiling, hard-swearing and indomitable soldier who in a battalion of brave men was one of the bravest". Born September 1921 - died March 1 2008.

It is a witty perspective, leading us to believe that the two men are the same person. It is high-summer and lunchtime in the City of London, England, where workers exit their offices to lap up the welcome sunshine during a rare city heatwave that many take advantage of by lying on steps and benches, while fully-dressed in their work clothes.

The days of the bowler are fast disappearing. Behind him are the tall and solid Corinthian pillars of the 3rd Royal Exchange built in 1842 by Sir William Tite.

  • Hidden in a wooden hut, a group of bird-spotting ornithologists peer through binoculars at the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) rreserve at Rainham Marshes, Essex England. Watching dozens of wintering birds, the group are intensely looking through their optical equipment in anticipation of seeing rare breeds at this Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), a wetland alongside the River Thames, 20 miles from Central London. A narrow slit is open to keep them hidden from sight so leaning on elbows and with a guide sheet in front to identify particular species, they concentrate on their hobby. The RSPB has 200 nature reserves covering almost 130,000 hectares, home to 80% of Britain's rarest or most threatened bird species. Its role is to speak out for birds and wildlife, tackling the problems that threaten the environment.
