  • While seated to have dinner at home, a young boy of about 10 years of age hides his face and wipes his lips with a serviette. Demonstrating perfect manners that his parents must have instilled in him, the lad's face is hidden from the viewer as he presses the cloth to his face to obscure his identity. He is eating some sort of pudding with a spoon and a fork rests on the highly-polished table on which an ornamental posy of flowers is reflected. It is a scene of immaculate etiquette that a boy from a middle-class background might be expected to show to elders and visitors. It is an example of grooming and pedigree to take with him out into the outside world where he will be expected to be the best behaved.

  • A 15 year-old boy blurs across woodland during a home-made zip wire ride on private land in Somerset. The young lad keeps his legs straight to avoid scraping them along the woodland floor and stopping him before the end of the short ride. In the background are members of his family of varying ages, encouraging and laughing as he sweeps past on this bright summer afternoon.

  • A middle-aged couple sleep on a blanket as a young boy digs a hole on the sandy beach at Scarborough. The generation gap is shown here with the older people unconscious after a day in sea air while the lad with the energy of youth puts much effort into shovelling sand from the growing hole. If they are related, they are oblivious as to the dangers of excavating holes on tidal beaches.

  • A schoolboy of Afro-Caribbean descent stands looking confused on a platform at Victoria mainline station in central London. The young lad looks smart in a new school uniform of cap, blazer, long trousers and polished black shoes. We might guess that it is the start of a new academic year and that he is about to attend a new school for which he needs to take a train on his own. His mother and younger and older sister are also to the far right of the picture so he may go with his elder sibling carrying a multi-coloured umbrella and a bright blue briefcase containing his lunch and a few items needed for lessons. Surrounded by adult commuters, some of who look on with mild amusement, also make await their train from the city out of town. Mostly, people mind their own business and what is a special day for the boy will become a much-travelled route.

  • A cheeky young boy climbs over a back yard gate armed with a homemade bow and arrow in a back street in Liverpool, England. His homemade toy is the antithesis of what a wealthy lad might wish for in 21st century Britain when gadgets were all a kid wants and games outside have become rare and uncool. But this is still the early 1990s in times of recession when a make do and mend philosophy means families improvise with what they have and wealth is out of reach for many.

  • As his mother washes clothes in a communal spring below, a young boy of about 9 years of age stands on a track in the Himalayan foothills near the town of Gorkha. Here, the British army traditionally recruits young men for the Gurkha regiment (as they have done since 1857). The lad is wearing a yellow hooded sweatshirt and like many in this region - even is sub-zero temperatures - flip-flops. Nepal is one of the world's poorest countries. The prospects for this child may mean they will in future, if the army has no place for him, he may try to seek work in cities like Kathmandu rather than face a lifetime's struggle in local agriculture, as can be seen in the valley below. Their supplies and contact with the outside world comes up from these tracks of boulders and stone along which either men or yaks carry up food for basic survival and luxury goods.

  • A portrait of three brothers of the same family have their picture taken outside their parents' home in Westcliff, England. The eldest is a teenager of approximately 17 and is holding his youngest brother who is still only 12 months-old. The third boy is biting his lip while looking to the viewer, more anxiously than the other two. He is possibly 14 but both the elder lads wear identically-designed jumpers that cut across the throat to allow their clean white shirts and ties to remain visible. Apart from the young child, the elders share the same dark hair colour but genetically, they share one chromosome that has given them heavy eyebrows, a family trait. This was taken on Kodachrome film stock in the spring of 1961 so the look and feel of the image is dated with wonderfully muted colours that this Kodak film offered to consumers in the early 60s.

He stands in the front doorway of his terraced home to celebrate the 50th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day on 6th May 1995. In the week near the anniversary date of May 8, 1945, when the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Germany and peace was announced to tumultuous crowds across European cities, the British still go out of their way to honour those sacrificed and the realisation that peace was once again achieved. Street parties now - as they did in 1945 - played a large part in the country's patriotic well-being.

  • A little boy wearing a blue jump suit stands on the pavement outside his house holding the handlebars of a favourite matching blue coloured tricycle. He looks upwards towards the viewer slightly bemused about having his picture taken by his father who looks down from a standing position. Meanwhile, the boys sister towers above him dressed in a bright red coat and clean white gloves and short white socks. Alongside her is a friend also wearing gloves and a knee-length skirt but we see only their lower bodies and not their faces so they are unrecognisable - an older sibling and a girl friend. It is the summer of 1960 and while the red is vibrant, the blues and greens are more muted in this Kodachrome film which has a wonderful magenta colour cast in the mid-tones reminiscent of the classic days of early photography when shifts in color gave a faded look

  • A young boy adjusts his goggles before swimming again in London's Serpentine pool, Kensington. This bathing area is where the normally busy Serpentine Swimming Club have the use of this Royal lake known as Lansbury's Lido. It is now normally open only in the summer, but one traditional event occurs each year on New Year's Day, when the ice is broken and brave bathers dive into the cold waters of the lake. The Serpentine will be used for the swimming leg of the triathlon at the London 2012 Olympics. The Serpentine gets its name from its supposedly snakelike, curving shape. It was formed in 1730 when Queen Caroline, wife of George II, ordered the damming of the River Westbourne and other natural ponds in Hyde Park.

A stick lies on the ground with a paper cup to collect any spare change offered and a cash customer stands entering his pin number into the automated bank dispenser, his back to the underclass of society. This has become normal for what has become the modern face of Italian society in this once-grand medieval city. The city lies on the River Arno and is known for its history and its importance in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance, especially for its art and architecture. A centre of medieval European trade and finance and one of the wealthiest cities of the time, Florence has been called the Athens of the Middle Ages.
